Heart Surgery for Charlie Kitten
Charlie is a 3-month-old kitten who has been in foster care with her mom and sisters since she was only a few weeks old. Bucks County SPCA’s veterinarian diagnosed her with a serious heart murmur and was able to get some very generous doctors at the University of Pennsylvania to look at her for us.
A veterinary cardiologist there diagnosed her with Persistent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). This is an opening in her heart that should have closed shortly after birth. Since it did not, she has abnormal blood flow in her heart. If this is not repaired surgically, Charlie’s heart will not be able to handle the extra work and she will go into heart failure. The cardiologist estimated Charlie had only two weeks left to live. BCSPCA wants to give Charlie this life-saving surgery. The surgeons will fix Charlie's heart by closing off the opening, after which she has a great chance of having a normal life.
Charlie’s surgery is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21. Students at Penn Vet will be observing to watch and learn from the rare procedure.
Our fundraising goal of $1,500 will cover Charlie’s surgery and follow-up care. Any funds collected over our goal will be used by Bucks County SPCA to provide care for other animals in need at our two shelter locations.
Doctors at the University of Pennsylvania are performing Charlie’s surgery at reduced cost. Her foster family is providing transportation into the city and home again. Will you help by making a gift toward Charlie’s medical expenses?
