Dewpal - No more water scarcity

--- Dutch version below ---

Who are we?

We are a group of master- and phd-students of the Ghent University and this year we will participate in the international iGEM competition. The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition is an internationally renowned competition in synthetic biology, in which teams from all over the world work on a project involving synthetic biology. At the end of October, all teams come together in Boston, MA, to present their project to each other and to the world at the Giant Jamboree.

What do we want to do?

Water scarcity is a growing problem in many areas of the world. Despite the huge amounts of water on our planet, only a small fraction of it is usable to humans. Most ways to collect fresh water, or convert non-fresh to fresh water is quite resource intensive. That is why we developed project Dewpal: a structure that is able to passively collect water from the air.

How do we want to do this?

Dewpal is a unique mixture of 3D-modelling, printing, and synthetic biology. In short, we are creating a shape which facilitates efficient water collection, based on the fogstand beetle. This animal can collect water from the air to survive the dry Namib desert climate. This shape will be 3D-printed using a biotin-containing filament. Biotin is a vitamin that can bind very strongly to a protein called streptavidin. We will use this characteristic strong binding to attach another protein to our structure; INP (Ice Nucleation Protein). INP is a protein found in certain bacteria, and is responsible for ice crystalisation and cloud formation. By fusing streptavidin with INP, we can bind this protein to our structure and improve the water collection capacity, and hence the water yield. More detailed information can be found on our website.

Why do we need your help?

Taking part in the iGEM competition is not free. Just participating already requires a registration fee of $5,000 USD. Furthermore, it would mean a lot to us if we could present our project at the Giant Jamboree in Boston, MA. However, the Jamboree requires an additional attendance fee of $695 USD per person. And of course, we still have to get there and need a place to stay for the duration of the Jamboree. Furthermore we also need a lot of materials to sufficiently develop en test prototypes.

Why donate?

The iGEM competition is prestigious and internationally renowned. If we can put our project into the spotlight here, is that one step closer to solving the problem of water scarcity.

Is this a cause close to your heart? With your donation, we can together take action towards a better world for everyone.

Every donation helps, even 1 euro!

And if you donate, you also get some unique gadgets

You can also help us out by sharing our fundraiser with your friends and family to spread the word!

The iGEM UGent team

Alles helpt, zelfs 1 euro!
