My name is Michael DeVuyst.
Nearly 7 years ago I decided to convert my 1990 Mazda Miata to fully electric drive. I was inspired! At the time, electric cars were next to nonexistent on the road, and seeing one in the wild was quite a rare occurrence. I felt that there should be more options out there! I didn't want to be slave to oil companies, buying gasoline in exchange for mobility. Why not power my car with domestically-made electrons? So, at 18, I took out the engine and started my conversion by replacing it with a new electric motor. This was the most ambitious project that I had ever set out to complete. With a massive amount of effort, time, and some financial help from my friends family, I was finally able to complete the conversion project in the Summer of 2015.
Now I need some help. I'm currently a student, trying to keep a full-time job while attending classes. I designed my project around the idea that I would eventually upgrade the batteries. Many parts were made to be adaptable for just such an upgrade.
I started this GoFundMe account so that I may be able to purchase a new Lithium Ion battery pack as a replacement for the heavy lead, budget-battery pack that I currently have. Unfortunately, with their added weight, I fear the car's range will slowly be dropping from bad to worse, limiting my job options to a smaller and smaller area without using public transit.
And along with that, the cost of the new batteries also comes the cost of a battery maintenance system. With all of these new components in mind, I knew it might be years before I could afford even half of a replacement pack... so I'm a little desperate.
I dedicated the last 6 years of life into this project. It's been my dream and my labor of love. My ultimate goal is to use this car to prove that you can convert literally ANYTHING to electric drive! There are no limits to what you can convert and what you can do!
With funding from this site, I will be able to complete my project and bring it to it's full potential. I would be unbelievably grateful for anyone who donates to this cause, no matter how much. Every penny will help bring this project to life in full power!
