My name is Brandon Rowley, I am 23 years old, and I am running to be a member of the Carlsbad City Council. My initial motivation to mount this campaign was the amount of times I hear politicians say that our youth are the future of this country. The reality, however, is that the average age demographic in higher elected office is 60 years old. In addition, the age demographic with the historically worst voter turnout is those between the ages of 18 - 29. If one is to believe that the youth are our future, than there must be more young adults in elected office to help shape the decisions that are supposedly made for our benefit. I strive to be a represntative that can bring the younger aged voters out of the electoral shadows and into the political spotlight, empowering them to raise their voice and make a difference.
Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of our officials have backgrounds in business or law. While this is important, there is a distinct lack of those with a background (or even interest) in science. I have a B.S in Biology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and a proven, diverse record in science and conservation in both my personal and professional life. I currently work at the San Diego Zoo as an insect keeper working on the recovery of the endangered quino checkerspot butterfly. I want to bring a perspective of critical thinking, conservation, and science to a council which oversees a city with pristine beaches and a large industry for eco tourism.
I am asking for any donations in order to further my campaign in a sustainable way. Other candidates have raised over $100,000. A lot of that money will be spent on print advertisements and mailing information. I will spend a smaller amount of money (and considerably less resources) by publishing and distributing information online, making bumper stickers, signs, and attending / organizing events where I can meet with voters face to face and be able to share my message.
If you are able to make a donation, I ensure the funds will be spent in a transparent and sustainable way with nothing to hide.
