Relief for Baton Rouge

My name is Fatima Mann, I am a local organizer in Austin, Texas, and the co-founder of the Austin Justice Coalition. We are a grassroots organization focused on improving the quality of life for people of color and poor people. We focus on issues pertaining to civil liberties, education, affordable housing, transportation, sustainability, and policing. Our organization prides itself with being a people of color led organization that partners with allies and other organizations of color to make Austin an equitable city for all people.
I attend law school at Southern University Law Center in Baton Rouge, and although the first day of school is on Thursday I am not returning until Saturday. This is due to the severe flooding in Baton Rouge that is being described as worse than Hurricane Katrina. My classmates, university faculty and professors, and local residents have been tremendously affected by the flood. I would like to come back to school with as many supplies for people as I can.
We are hosting a fundraiser collecting various supplies at various drop sites in Austin. We need money to rent a truck to bring supplies into Baton Rouge. Money raised will go towards renting a truck and getting enough supplies to fill a 12 foot Budget truck which is 35 gallon tank 8-10 miles a gallon.
There's a $150 refundable deposit, with a $99.10
Truck fee with taxes, gas averages approximately $2.00 gallon gas and Baton Rouge is approximately 435 miles from Austin making gas around 140.00.
Making the trip successful will cost around $400.
We are asking for $400 to cover transporting expenses and anything else will be used to purchase more necessary supplies for the people of Baton Rouge. Thank you for helping us make a change in people's lives that have been so greatly affected by this disaster. With your help we can help those effected by severe flooding.
People need the following and more (please buy all new products):
-Power Strips
-Things to bathe with(towels, soap, laundry bag, razors, mouth wash, toothpaste, tooth brushes, please be mindful of possible allergies etc.)
-batteries (all sizes)
-flashlights
-Adult and baby diapers
-Baby water, formula, and food
-baby clothes, bibs, and maybe a toy or two all in orginal packages
-Charges for various devices (Androids, iphones, tablets, etc.)
-Hair products for African Americans along with others
-Reading Glasses
-Bedding (Sheets, pillows, comforters)
-Sleeping bags or blow up mastresses that don't need electricity to fill up
-School supplies for Kindergarten through Graduate school
-Lap tops or tablets for students
- Healthy Nonperishables (please be mindful of possible allergies or dietary restrictions)
-fans (battey operating possibly)
