I am a counselor at a junior high in Mesa, AZ. We run academic support groups for students who have failed an academic class the previous semester. Kids don't fail because they can't do the work--they fail because they THINK they can't do the work! Our Groups meet once a week with a counselor, for one semester, to learn self-management strategies that help students improve their academic performance.
We need incentives to motivate our students to use the strategies in all of their classes between Group meetings. We have a token economy with fake money and a store; they earn the money by following through on improvement goals and they can use it to buy items at the store. We are severely limited by what we can purchase with money from sources such as Student Council. We would like to purchase $5 gift cards to stores the kids like at the mall, but we are not allowed to purchase those with district money.
Our success rate with these kids has been high! Roughly 80% of the kids in our Groups pass all of their classes by the end of the semester, and they become more and more convinced of their ability to "do school" as the year progresses. When they learn to "do school," they start to see themselves achieving other goals, and that changes not only who they are now, but who they can become. It's a powerful program when we have the right motivators to start kids on that journey!
We serve roughly 80 students per year (40 per semester) through this program, and we'll be starting our Groups the last week in August. We can start using the money we raise as early as mid-September. We welcome questions and interest in our program because we are changing lives! We will be grateful to all who can donate even just $5 or $10 toward our goal. Thank you in advance, for caring about our students!
