Statue of Equality illustration

Donation protected

I need $700 by September 9th to hire a professional illustrator to draw my vision of a Statue of Equality, to be erected in Montgomery, Alabama.

The illustration will be displayed at the upcoming National Forum on Race in Atlanta (September 2016), where I've been invited to speak about the statue. After that, the illustration will be used to publicize a larger fundraising campaign which will pay for a scale model by sculptor Ronald McDowell.

The artist is Anna Dittmann, an illustrator from Georgia who now lives in Scotland. Her beautiful work can be viewed here:

More about the statue project:

A statue of Lady Equality, also known as Usawa (the Swahili word for "Equality"), would be built overlooking Montgomery, Alabama — the city where Rosa Parks stood her ground. The Statue of Equality would have facial features of African Humanity, would be silver in color, and would be the exact same height as the copper Statue of Liberty. She would have two wings. Her gesture would be at the moment of taking flight, with only a toe on the ground, with her eyes on the horizon, and her hands on her heart. Though of Black appearance, the Statue of Equality would be for all Americans (and even for all of humanity) — just as the Statue of Liberty, though of Caucasian appearance, represents America's and humanity's ideal of liberty for all. Lady Usawa represents the principle that all human beings are created equal.

The renowned African-American sculptor Ronald McDowell has signed onto the project. McDowell is the sculptor of the MLK statue which is also being built in Montgomery.

The statue vision was first announced by civil rights veteran Rubye Howard Braye at a national forum in Tuskegee; there's a video here . Since then, I and a small support circle have been working on bringing this to reality.

Any funds raised beyond the $700 will go toward further aspects of this big project.

There are further plans for a third statue: the Statue of Fraternity (Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and Siblinghood), with an American Indian model, to be built on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, California.
