My 13-year-old granddaughter Kendal Hudson-Lane’s world has totally been changed over the last year. She went from a straight A competitive cheerleader, to a weak and fragile young lady bound to a neck brace and a wheelchair at times. She has been unable to attend school and has had to be homebound schooled and usually only leaves the house for physical therapy or hospital/doctor visits. Kendal has Chiari I malformation and Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS). She has cervical instability which means her spine is pressing on her brain stem.

The closest neurosurgeon that specializes in cases like hers is Dr. Greenfield in New York City. He and his partner will be operating on Kendal on OCTOBER 26th. This procedure is cervical fusion and decompression surgery. This is a very dangerous and delicate surgery that is located at the base of the brain, but it is needed to release pressure from her brain stem which will help with the crippling neurological symptoms.

Kendal has a wonderful support system. Her mom, Amber Lane who is a hospice nurse and had to research to diagnose her since no local doctors were able to properly diagnose her. As many of you know, hospice nurses are there for patients and their families in their darkest hours. She serves Northeast North Carolina including Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Edenton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Chowan counties.

Her Dad, Mike Lane is an EMT and volunteer firefighter that has given a lot of his time to the community as a coach and referee. Kendal also has a wonderful 6-year-old brother who has watched his sister decline and often says he just wants his Sissy back normal.

There are many expenses that come with Kendal’s scheduled spinal surgery that is scheduled for October 26th. Kendal and her parents will have to stay in NYC for around 3 or more weeks, and she may not be allowed to ride via car after the surgery due risk post operation damage. A flight home may be necessary.

Your donation will support Kendal during this major surgery by keeping the family with her. How could any parent function and work a normal day while their child was 400 miles away having major life altering cervical spinal surgery? Thank you for any support you can offer, be it a donation or simply sharing this fund raiser. Updates on Kendal’s condition will be posted.

At the end of October Kendal's cervical fusion and decompression surgery went well but was very painful. It helped with some of her symptoms and she is still healing from it. She was still having bad headaches and was leaking cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) from her incision site and nose. So another trip to Neurosurgeon in NY in December was required and she was diagnosed with Ideopathic Intracranial Hypertension, where it was decided that she would require a shunt to be placed in her brain to pump out excess csf. This surgery (brain surgery #2) was performed around the end of January in NY, requiring another week long hospital stay. That helped her headaches but February was full of ER visits locally for severe abdominal pain, scans never picking up the source of the problem. By the end of February, my daughter decided that Kendal needed to go to the ER in NY where her NS is because she was in so much pain and vomiting. She spent another 8 days in the hospital where they managed her pain. Kendal was then released from the hospital but was only home for three days before spiking a 104 fever and was taken by ambulance to CHKD. CHKD said that Kendal was too complex for them to handle and had her flown by medical jet back to NY. There they finally figured out the source of the problem. Staph infection of the abdomen and tubing from the shunt, So the Center for Disease Control (CDC) was added to her team of doctors. Her NS removed the tubing from behind her ear all the way down into her abdomen. While pumping 3 types of antibiotics by IV to cure staph, her NS discovered that there was a recall on her shunt and he wasn't 100% sure that infection wasn't involved in the brain area, so another surgery ( brain surgery#3) was required to remove the shunt. After 2 weeks of antibiotics and some time for her body to heal some, her NS put in a new shunt and tubing(brain surgery#4). After that surgery Kendal couldn't sit up without severe headaches and vomiting in which her Ns said she was having a rare complication known as the cyphon effect where too much CSF was being drained. Her NS had to do another surgery adding an additional piece to the shunt to alleviate that problem(Brain surgery#5). Kendal was finally released a week ago today after a month long stay in the hospital in NY. Her mother hardly left her side the entire time, requiring her to miss a month of work without pay!! The last couple of months have been a nightmare for Kendal, her mom Amber Lane, dad Mike Lane and her little brother Kayden. This has left the family in a bad place financially, so if you could donate and or share this Go Fund Me Page it would be greatly appreciated. Kendal is finally getting her personality and appetite back!!! GOD IS GOOD !!!

Thanks to the entire currituck community for the overwhelming show of support for Kendal Hudson! Yesterday the entire Moyock Middle School football team wore purple in support of chiari awareness.

The cheerleaders also wore purple ribbons. They even included Kendal and her friend Reagan who also has chiari to join in for the coin toss. We are so blessed to have such support and it has touched our hearts!

Surgery time is getting closer and Kendal is ready to get this over with and start to heal. Kendal also has had the back of her head shaved in preparation for the surgery and another spinal tap in which her cerebral spinal fluid pressure was high and they brought the pressure down some which temporarily has eased her headaches and twitches.

Thanks to all who have donated, shared this post and most of all prayed for my wonderful granddaughter Kendal and our family. God Bless!!!

Thanks to everyone who has donated to keep Kendal and her Mom and Dad together during her surgery. Kendal has had more ct scans and labs done so that the surgeons know more about where they will be putting screws and rods in her head and neck!! We have been told that both surgeons will be in the operating room through the entire surgery, and that it will take 4 or 5 HOURS!! I would really like to thank Pastor James Harrington and the good people of Fellowship Baptist Church for all your prayers and support over the last year and your generous Love Offering!! Kendal has her good and bad days and really appreciates all the donations and prayers and support!!!

We would like to thank you all. This includes Mom. We would never ask anyone for any money....but because Mom set this up and your generous donations, we were able to secure a place to stay for 2 and a half weeks. We were hoping to get into Ronald McDonald house but they are full for the rest of the year. Hotels (even the shady ones) were averaging about $6000. We were able to find an apartment to rent near the hospital (for less than a hotel) and pay for it thanks to you all. Her pre-op appointment is the 20th and surgery is 26th. Due to her taking several days to recover from a ride like that, it is better for her to just stay up there. I'm scared for my baby but probably not as much as I should be. I have complete faith that God led us to this wonderful dr and that God will give him wisdom and guide his and his partner's hand during the surgery. I just hope I continue to have this peace in the coming weeks and during the several hour surgery. Again, thank you all for the donations, but most importantly.....your prayers.

We love you Kendall! We wish you the best and have at least one good day to enjoy yourself! I know what it's like to have an illness that no one can understand or comprehend the suffering and the pain we endured. Take care, Kendall and take your days one at a time. We will continue to pray for you. Best wishes.
