I came into contact with Martha and William through my employment with MKO on August 4, 2016; the family came to my office requesting emergency assistance due to circumstances from a recent fire on August 1, 2016 at their residence on Victor Street (see story attached). Unfortunately, MKO does not receive funding to assist individuals in need however I felt moved by the trauma and desperation this family is experiencing to try to help them directly with cash for a new home and some basic furnishings.

Martha and William have 10 children currently residing with them. They recently lost a child, Wolfgang to cancer on October 30, 2015.

The family relocated back to this residence at the request of the children who wanted to live where they last lived with their late brother. The day they moved in was the day of the fire. They had to run out of the house and were not able to retrieve any of their belongings; I understand that what was left was put out on the lawn by the past landlord and much of their remaining things were stolen by passersby.  Last week i was able to do a basic drive to collect some clothing; people also offered some furnishings however they still do not have a home. There are 10 surviving children.

Dakota (M) – 19, Precious (F) – 17, William Jr. (M) – 16,  Angel (F) – 13,  Sunshine (F) – 12, Kylie (F) – 9, Ariel (F) – 7,  Andy (F) – 5,  Jaxon (M) - 4 , & Montana (M) – 2

I felt compelled to advocate diligently for the needs of this family in this latest tragedy as the parents feel helpless. So far, MKO, Eagle Urban Transition Centre, Red Cross, Manitob Housing and EIA are aware and have been mobilized to assist but we still haven't found a home fast enough and they will probably need damage deposit and 1st month rent asap, or to pay for lodging until a home is secured. For now they are told they might have to to the Salvation Army and this is not acceptable for the children; they are running out of options.

They have dealt primarily with a private housing agent to date as many public agencies have indicated to them they don’t have units big enough to accommodate such a large family and currently nothing is available.

MKO will continue to offer support and advocacy but we are not a service delivery organization; MKO focuses primarily on support for MKO citizens as well as general advocacy work and political advocacy for the Chiefs of 30 northern First Nations.

Should you require any more information from me, feel free to contact me at MKO.

I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to a favourable outcome and to have the Hudsons in a new home sooner than later.
