On Sunday, August 14, my husband Billy and I awoke to discover that our neighborhood was completely swamped with flood waters from the Amite River, which was swollen following a massive rain event.
Our neighborhood has never flooded in 35 years, flood insurance was not required, and we did not have it. As we watched the water creep up in our yard, the surreal reality that our house was going to flood crept in.
We did the best we could to prepare, but evacuated with only minimal items and clothes, and at least 18 inches of water came into the house. We're dry, healthy and ready to rebuild, and we've had a number of wonderful friends and family ask us what they can do. And frankly, the hard part has only begun. We'll need to completely gut and rebuild our home and replace our lost contents, and as you might be able to guess, that's going to cost a lot of money.
So if you're so inclined, please give what you can. Every bit is appreciated.
