Tamalpais High School Mock Trial (THMT) is a nationally recognized program that engages students with the law and criminal justice system and serves as a venue for students to bond and gain skills in leadership, public speaking, and communication. Simply put, THMT is life-changing.
In 2005, THMT won the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina - the only California high school to do so in the modern era - after winning the California State Championship. In 2009, THMT won the California State Championship and placed Sixth at Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. For the past 21 consecutive years, THMT has won the Marin County Championship and has consistently placed among the top teams at the California State Championship. Many students throughout the years have won countless individual awards.
Students take on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and bailiffs to produce a "mock trial." They develop constitutional arguments, learn the rules of evidence, draft examinations, construct case theories, and deliver opening statements and closing arguments. Students compete against other high schools in REAL courtrooms in REAL courthouses in front of REAL judges. THMT is competitive as any other sports team; but we call it "verbal bloodsport."
THMT's success comes from the hard work and devotion of its students, who, in addition to balancing coursework, athletics, volunteering, dedicate themselves to their team. After all, THMT's mantra is "One team, one family."
From pre-season planning to recruitments and tryouts, from preparing case binders to the first few practices, and from scrimmages and tournaments to actual competition, there are many costs associated with running such a high-caliber program. Funds are needed for traveling across the state to invitational tournaments, hosting scrimmages with visiting high schools, purchasing supplies and materials, and everything else in between.
THMT is proud to represent the City of Mill Valley, the County of Marin, and the State of California every year. And in doing so, the "THMT" name isn't just known for its success in competition, but also for the kindness, decency, and humanity its students show towards their competitors and the judicial system.
