Howdy folks!

The moniker name, is Ginger Bones. I'm a musician outta (close enough to) Minneapolis, Minnesota. I'm seeking assistance in the financial (and friendshipal) process of recording a musical album. Yes! That's right! Up until 2 years ago, I truly never dreamed this would be a passion and pursuit of mine. But it is; quite honestly one of the most important at this time in my nomadic life.

I attended UW-Eau Claire (yes, I sat amongst the very same dorms where I'm sure Sir Justin Vernon of Bon Iver birthed some parts of his spectacular musical projects) for my freshman year of "higher" education (a truly commendable school, but an avenue that just wasn't for me). I spent most of my time dinkin' around, uneasy and unsure about what I could see myself committing energy to, day-in and day-out. I would quietly strum my guitar and sing softly in the single dorm room (you can ask me another time the story of how I was kindly asked to leave my first dorm assignment) in which I lived.

Interests and past relationships to hobbies came and went, but nothing stuck, especially not one that would enter me into a professional dimension. And all of that turned out just fine. I moved back to my childhood home in the land of 10,000 beautiful lakes, still keeping my relationships woven with those I'd met during that pivotal first year of college; an epoch of much growth and learning.

But new friendships soon sprouted in the Twin Cities; I tried out different jobs, stayed stuck in a few old habits, and did my first open mic at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior, spurred on by my former boss, Tom Peterson (Malamayna). He essentially and non-chalantly asked me, why not??

Precisely. Why the heck not?

Terrified, with a lack of experience and a quick bout of anxiety, we did it; my first musical-collaboration pal John Curtis and I hopped on stage and performed. I felt strangely calm while on in the performance space of that quaint little listening room; like I was meant to be up there? For lack of a better cliché phrase, I believe that I was.  It was nice to have someone else up there with me, too.

I participated in a required speech class at my local community college, and feel desperate to highlight the inspiration that the professor and the class put in me. I didn’t know it at the time, but I can see that it has helped me to prepare better for artistic performance and seek to give the audience the best, most comfortable and focused experience that I can. But each show is varied, each member of your listening crew has different ears and it is the ultimate artist challenge to stay true to who you really believe you are, and what you want to portray through your art form, while also catering in a way to what your audience is looking for in a show. I learn something, every, single, time. Every single day, in fact. Because being a musician is not just about being a musician, it isn’t about Grammy’s, or radio time, or record sales, or even quality of equipment (don’t get me wrong, all these things could potentially come into play in a musician’s lifetime) but it’s about utilizing a gift, an appreciation for heavenly gifts, cared for by our broken, leaky, ginger earthly bodies.

That’s all we can do…strive to learn, and use our bones to carry us all over; to meet and experience life in new ways, through clean eyes, learning and pouring love over the people that we meet.

And the education continues; for me it now revolves around music, a powerful art form that has enflamed my body and mind with purpose. One I want to use for the betterment of people's quality of life.

This album that I am crafting, with the help of Leo Strei on the production end of things (Leo recently mastered the sound of an Eau Claire based band, Idle Empress, a record that has played over and over and over in my car on long drives through country-sides. He helped the band capture the beauty and sincerity of their sound, and he is an extremely capable and talented producer based out of EC/MPLS) I am so honoured and overjoyed to be able to work in close proximity with the musicians of Eau Claire and Minneapolis; two cities that have captured my heart so fiercely.

We have recorded the skeletons of songs that will go on this creation; with the help of percussionist “Diamond” Dave Powers (The Staves, 58 Belvedere, Aero Flynn, PUNCHER and any other damn project he feels like being in) and bassist Pat Kuehn (58 Belvedere, Guerilla Toss, Wei Zhongle, Pat Keen and also any other damn project he feels like being in). With no prior meetings or engagements before the first recording session, at Uptown Church in …you guessed it, Uptown! We pulled together a few songs that sound like sound! I’m very grateful for getting an opportunity to have them on my songs; they are incredible musicians whose improvisational skills are top-notch.

There is still work to be done!

That’s where I need your help. I want to go after this project, hard, and complete it within a short timeline. These songs have been written over the past 2 years, and are eager to become realized, if only to free up further exploration of improvement and sound. The next stage of development comes with the recording of additional instruments, main components of that being my dear pals Renata Solum on violin (The Be Stills) and Carlisle Evans Peck on piano. Katie Henrie (Symphony of Nations) has layed down a GORGEOUS accordion melody on the title track “Trains over Movies” which I’ll be releasing within a week.

Recording is scheduled for the 20th of August, and from that time on, mixing and mastering will be the next step. Album art shall be curated by the oh so talented Lauren Weiler, and printing will follow soon after. This is my hope! But it costs money. If you have that to give, feel free. I would be full of gratitude if you would help in that way; but if that isn’t within your ability, any form of encouragement and advice would be appreciated!

There are rewards! They will be rewarding, I promise. Any gift will receive a CD once they are printed. Also, it won’t be a gift bag of pencils and small candies; further rewards for larger donors will include exclusive, hand-crafted Ginger Bones merchandise! A passion for local art and music is a huge piece of what I want my music to embellish on, which means that beautiful, personalized items will also a part of what this GoFundMe campaign will be supporting. I have a lot of talented friends and family who are a huge part of my life and my music; this is my love letter to you all.

Trains Over Movies EP; let’s make it happen! I’d love it if you’d come along…
