Strong bodies, strong minds: Boost recovery, prevent relapse, build healthy lives
Who we are
We are business leaders and community advocates of Leadership Greenville Class 42 who believe in treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – in cases of addiction recovery. Strong bodies help build strong minds and spirits, and we believe improving individual outcomes will build a healthier community overall.
Who we’re raising money for
Overcomers is a 27-week addiction recovery program for men who need a more structured, longer-term approach. The program builds strong minds and spirits with focused counseling and classes, but needs help building strong bodies with exercise programs that can aid in recovery and prevent relapse.
With a 12-station, 1/3 mile running and exercise track, we can help thousands of men over many years build mental and spiritual fortitude and by encouraging healthy habits that will last long after they graduate from the program. Exercise has been proven to improve learning and memory, as well as alleviate depression, all of which support addiction recovery and prevent relapse.
How the money will be used
Our team ranges from business strategists to professional construction contractors, and we can do much of the planning and building ourselves. However, building materials and other construction costs are expensive, especially if the wellness center is going to last for a decade or more.
Why this means so much to us
Our region is one of the fastest growing metros in the country, and has made national headlines for its high quality of life and progress with economic development. We see a city on the verge of greatness, and we know that greatness springs from a healthy community.
South Carolina has one of the highest mortality rates for drug overdose in the country, and that rate has tripled since 1999. If we can help men overcome addiction and keep them as healthy, active and contributing members of society, we believe that everybody benefits.
Overcomers is a program through Miracle Hill Ministries, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that runs more than a dozen programs that serves victims of poverty, broken homes or other problems through temporary and long-term support.
Founded in 1937, the organization is one of the largest in the Upstate of its kind, and serves an average of 560 homeless children and adults daily in Greenville, Pickens, Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.
Leadership Greenville is a year-long program aimed at building informed, committed leaders within Greenville County. Founded in 1973, the program has more than 1900 alumni, many of which have served in key leadership positions in their businesses as well as within city council, county council, school boards, members of Congress and judges.
