Kevin Powers TBI Medical Fund

Kevin Powers of Woodstock, GA was in a car accident on Tuesday evening, July 26th, while driving his Jeep Wrangler on I-575 near Woodstock, GA. He was ejected from the Jeep. Along with many other injuries, Kevin sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from the impact and in an effort to save his life doctors placed him in a medically induced coma. Due to the large amount of swelling in his brain he had to be kept in the medically induced coma in the ICU until the swelling resided enough that his injuries could be assessed.

As with all aspects of life, Kevin has been a fighter since the accident occurred. With his family by his side, the doctors began the process of removing him from the medically induced coma on Thursday, July 28. His family and friend’s prayers have been answered and we are excited to share that Kevin’s doctors now consider him “stable”. Kevin has fought his way out of the ICU, his ventilator has been removed, and the slow process of waking from the coma is underway.

His doctors are now working towards getting him to the point where he can be transferred to the Shepard Center in Atlanta. There he will spend five or more weeks in intensive therapy where they hope to help him regain memory and regain basic function. The hope is that after five weeks at Shepard Center he will recover to the point that he can then be moved to homecare, where he will need around-the-clock-care, a home-nursing team, and ongoing therapy to continue his recovery.

While Kevin has a very long road ahead of him, we are thankful for those around us who have been supporting our family, not only now but also over recent months as our family has had to face other medical issues. We are also thankful to live in a part of the country where Kevin can receive care from one of the top ranked TBI recovery centers in the United States and still be close to his family.

While Kevin has health insurance, we know to recover from an injury like this at the privately-owned world class recovery center his doctors are recommending, means he will be faced with hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills on top of what insurance maxes out at. The decision from his doctors is clear though, and this is the recommended facility to give him the best opportunity to recover back to full function to be the father his son knows, and the family member and friend we all know and love.

If you know Kevin, you know asking for help isn’t his strong suit. And while we know he would likely not ask others to help in this way, we have been urged by those friends and extended family members around him to open this page, and allow others to help. And, we want Kevin to have access to the best possible care, in hopes of regaining full function and returning to being an active father, to being an active member of the community, and to enjoying life to the fullest with his friends and family on the lake and around Woodstock.

Here’s where you can help! We are starting this page to allow a place for friends, family, and heck even friends of friends to donate towards helping Kevin finance the long road of medical care ahead, so he can receive the best of care for this complex injury. We don’t want Kevin’s recovering to be limited by finances. To us, sacrificing care when it comes to a brain injury that can affect so much of who he is, just isn’t an option. But at this point we don’t know what the future will bring and we want to ensure Kevin will have access to the best of care at every step in the process… we are forever thankful to those who are able to help us make this a reality!

All funds will be used directly towards paying for the medical bills not covered by insurance for the recovery facility recommended by his doctors, and home-nursing / therapy required to maintain his care and improvement once he is able to return home.

Please donate via this page to help us ensure that Kevin receives the best possible care. If you are unable to help financially, we grealty appreciate you sharing this with your network and appreciate you keeping Kevin in your thoughts and prayers!
