Our school takes a trip to Washington, D.C. every two years. It's a phenomenal experience for our rural, lower socio-economic student population that rarely travels outside of our small town. Though most families struggle to meet the costs of the trip, there are a few families that really try and fall short of the expected amount. Six of our students have sold goods during fundraisers and have tried to raise funds, but they have fallen short of the $600 cost of the trip. All students are A/B students who adhere to the high expectations of our school. They are proud students who have not requested assistance, but they long to be with their classmates on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Even more special is that four of the six students have Mexican roots and speak English as a second language.
Educators have small windows to make lifelong positive changes in how students view the world. The Washington, D.C. trip provides one of the greatest windows our school has. These students understand hardship. These students often lose opportunities. I do not want this to be one of them.
Thank you for any support you can offer!
