Send Katy Tur on Vacation
$2,669 of $5,000 goal
But at least we get to watch from our living rooms. Reporter Katy Tur has to face it every day from the battlefield, from the trenches. She gets cursed, threatened, spit on, and has to go back and do it again the next day. It got so bad one time she needed to be escorted from the venue to her car by the Secret Service. She is the living embodiment of the First Amendment. http://tinyurl.com/zu5lndt
We believe she deserves a vacation when this nightmare is over. We are raising money to send her on one, hopefully at least enough for a weekend away, a long, relaxing weekend. Glass of wine (or three?), good steak dinner, creme brulee with rasberries for dessert (am I projecting?). Maybe a show. Of the good kind.
Can we do this? Can we give Katy a break?
Edit. I've been asked by the good folks at gofundme to fill in some info about this campaign.
1. Who I am - kim morris, listed in the info already.
2. Where I'm from - Connecticut, listed in the info already.
3. My relationship to the parties you're raising funds for - I have no relationship to Katy Tur, except I am a news consumer, as most Americans are, and most of the world is, following this campaign towards the White House.
4. How the funds will be spent (be specific as possible) - - - Ms. Tur will be spending the funds as she sees fit, on decompressing from this ptsd-inducing churning wringer that the press is being subjected to on a daily basis.
5. How I intend to get the funds to those in need - As we get closer to the funding date 11.9, I will be contacting NBC, and her agent, to discuss disbursment of the funds.
Edit I'm moving Update 3 to the front page, so everyone sees it first.
Hello folks! The world is a small place. We have reached the ears of Katy, and she has answered. This morning I received a message from Katy Tur, I share it here with you all now.
Thank you. This is hilarious and hugely flattering. I do need a vacation.
But this money shouldn't go to my post election margarita fund. I have a solid job and supportive network behind me. If you wouldn't mind, I would be honored if you could forward this money to the Rory Peck Fund.
It supports journalists who do not have an influential news network behind them. They are reporters who go to war zones and hostile environments as freelancers. Or reporters who live in countries where freedom of the press does not exist. They risk their lives to keep us informed. The Rory Peck fund helps keep them and their families protected.
Thank you to everyone for watching, caring, and fighting for us!! (Also thank you for reminding me that a beach and a cold drink are on the horizon)
From Rory Peck's website:
The principal objectives of RPT are to provide practical assistance and support to freelance newsgatherers and their families worldwide, to raise their profile, promote their welfare and safety, and to support their right to report freely and without fear.
We believe that freelancers play an important and integral role within newsgathering, and see the Trust's role in protecting and supporting them as a practical and significant contribution to independent journalism and the free flow of information.
Our history & work
The Rory Peck Trust was set up in 1995 in memory of freelance cameraman Rory Peck, who was killed in Moscow in 1993. RPT remains totally independent and relies on contributions from corporations, trusts, foundations and individuals to carry out its work. Based in London, we work globally with a range of international and local partners. Find out about our patron, board, associates and staff.
~~This is Kim again.
Monday, 8.22.16, I will be contacting the RPT to arrange transfer of funds to them, but I will keep this campaign open, as promised, until 11.9, the day after the Presidential campaign. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed, and to everyone who still will, knowing where your dollars will help.
And Katy, if you're still listening, we are too. Thank you for all you, and your colleagues do, every day, for the First Amendment.
I know she had stalkers. She had someone send her roses to work, said they'd wait. Secret service escorting her from the floor of the rally is something we've all heard about.
What an amazing person, and I'm again thanking you for going on the fundraising journey with me in her honor. It was well-deserved.
She's won the The Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism!
With reporters, news media and even the truth under assault, the winners of the 2017 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism demonstrate that the legacy of the longtime CBS anchor is alive and well.
Read the full PRESS RELEASE and view winning entries below. The trophies will be presented at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Friday, April 28.
At the awards event in 2005, Cronkite warned that “it’s going to be, to a large degree, up to us in television and radio, in broadcasting” to equip Americans “to perform the act of intelligently selecting our leaders…. If we fail at that, our democracy, our republic is, I think, in serious danger.”
Announcing the winners, USC Annenberg Professor and Lear Center Director Marty Kaplan said, “Today, at this seriously dangerous moment for our democracy, these Cronkite Awards honor journalists, stations and networks stepping up to their civic responsibility to tell Americans the truth.”
We are so proud of you, Ms. Tur, and could not have made it through the campaign, and what has happened after, without you. #PressOn https://learcenter.org/project/ca/
I want to thank you all for the support you've shown her and the Rory Peck Trust throughout this fundraising course. What started out as a motherly desire for Katy to have a night away from the crassness of the Trump crazies, has turned into a sizeable donation to a foundation that supports journalists all over the world. From a tiny acorn a mighty oak tree grows, together we've raised almost $2700 for the Rory Peck Trust.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you, and thank you Katy. Happy Vacation!
