Nick Watson's Medical Fund

$85,270 of $100,000 goal

Raised by 1,020 people in 26 months
Hi, I am Lisbeth Cassaday, the proud aunt of my brilliant 24-year old nephew Nicholas Watson.  Nick was on vacation with his mom (my sister Lisa Watson) in Europe  when the unthinkable happened. On July 10th, the last day of their vacation, my newphew and his girlfriend rented a motor scooter in Nice, France and were tragically hit by a drunk driver who ran a red light and fled the scene with no regard to their condition.

Nick underwent emergency surgery to save his life.  He has suffered a traumatic brain injury of the severest kind as a result of the accident, along with multiple injuries including fractures to his pelvis and spine.  In addition, Nick's healthcare was compromised by the terrorist attack in Nice which happened just four days later. The hospital was overwhelmed and it became clear that we need to get him home immediately.

Many of you have heard me speak about Nick.  He is truly an exceptional human being.  His laughter is infectious, his mind brilliant and his friends many.  Nick had been working at the National Institue of Health (NIH) doing cancer research and was about to go to Med School. His future was bright and my hope is that he get well soon.

Nick's family is in the process of getting him airlifted back to the States, which is not covered by insurance and enourmously expensive. It is anticipated that Nick will amass additional costs not paid by insurance and undergo long term rehabilitation for a number of years.
Nick championed those in need and right now, he could use your help.  Money raised by this campaign will go directly to Nicks family to pay for his medical care.

Hi everyone, I wanted to provide an update on Nick's progress. After a long and arduous 6 months recuperating in hospitals in France, TN and Georgia, Nick returned home earlier this month, the day after his 25th birthday. He is surrounded by family, friends, therapists and caregivers and continues his long journey toward recovery.

Miraculously, Nick is able to swallow, eat and communicate. He is overjoyed to be home in TN but still has a lengthy road ahead of him. On behalf of his family, we wanted to express our gratitude for all the love, support and assistance that you have provided. Your extreme acts of kindness have enabled Nick and his family to soldier on during times of darkness. The overwhelming well-wishes, prayers and financial support by friends and complete strangers has been staggering.

Nick has a long, difficult road ahead of him but he is a determined young man and he is working hard to recover his independence. Please feel free to reach out to his mother Lisa Watson, or Paula Mercedez if you'd like to call or visit Nick. All are welcome. I've attached a few images of Nick. His smile gives us all hope.

With gratitude,

Lisa Watson

Hi everyone, its been awhile since I updated you on Nick's progress. Nick has made great strides --he was moved to Shepherd Brain Injury Center in Atlanta this past Monday. Nick's trach and feeding tube were removed. He's eating regular food with feeding assistance and can formulate words and communicate. He's got a long road ahead of him but he's in the best place possible to achieve recovery. Everyone's love and encouragement has been a huge pillar of strength for his family and close friends.

Nick's good friend Alex and girlfriend Paula have created wristbands to serve as a daily reminder that Nick is a fighter. The purchase of the wrist bands will offset Nick's ongoing recovery costs. The message on the wristband reads "Just Call Me Nick." Those close to him know this phrase well as its references Nick's wit and comedic nature. The wristbands are $8 and can be obtained by emailing watson.strong.14@gmail.com. Those living in the D.C. area can contact Ben Eden at 540-222-3959 to receive the wristbands.

Thank you all for your continued love and support.

Hi Everyone, Nick got moved from Vanderbilt Hospital to Select Care Hospital in Nashville to continue getting better. He was stable enough to move and has been there since Friday. He still needs to wake up more before he can hopefully go to Sheppard Brain Injury Center in Atlanta. He can raise his eyebrows, give a thumbs up and we pray for his continued wellness. Please spread the word on his gofundme page. We've got a long way to go but are hopeful. Thank you all for your support and continued prayers.

Hi everyone. Nick is still at Vanderbilt University and was moved to a private room on the trauma step-down unit. Nick was able to open and close his eyes on command and was able to give us several thumbs ups. He even gave an extra big thumbs up when asked if he likes music. Progress not perfection. It's one day at a time.

Mrs. Cassaday, thank you for taking the time to organize this fundraiser. I know Nick through a mutual friend, and even in the limited time I've spent with him, it is easy to see how special he truly is. I am looking forward to seeing the miraculous things Nick will continue to provide for the world in the near future, and the inspiration he will instill in others once he is fully healed.

My son Michael sustained a severe traumatic brain injury from a near fatal automobile accident almost 10 years ago. I don't know where Nick or his family live, but I would highly recommend Spaulding rehab hospital in Boston (actually Charlston) and Crotchet Mountain Rehab in New Hampshire

I wish there was something I was able to do. Since I seen this campaign I've had Nick as well as your family in my prayers. He seems to be a strong person and with everyone's support I'm more than positive he will recover 1110000000..%. I've been trying to raise money to help my mother out due to medical expenses as well as prescriptions needed for her disease so I completely understand the stress the entire family has to go through with these ridiculously high medical bills. It's unbelievable sometimes how these hospitals can change the prices they do to save someone's life. It's like they'll save your life but put you in debt in the process. I do pray everything for Nick and your family gets better and back to normal very soon. God bless ♡
