LOVE, LOSS, AND GREED: THE BATTLE OVER HOUSE AND HOME IN QUEER SAN FRANCISCO
Holly Park Collective, home to queer, people of color activists, is under threat of displacement and eviction. When the speculative market exploded in 2014, we allege that capitalist greed took over the heart and soul of Holly Park Collective's co-founder, Adán Luevano. As co-owner of the property that housed the collective for which he was a active member and resident, he declared his intention to sell the property to the highest bidder. This would displace and evict his former partner Sahee, their kid, and chosen brothers Izzy Alavaran and Gilbert Villareal.
The collective always began as an anti-gentrification project and collective members were astonished at his willingness to push people out of their homes for chance at a 'gold rush' profit. While in conflict mediation with collective members, Adán left the collective unannounced last September, 2015. This past April 2016, he sued Sahee Kil, collective member and co-owner of the property, to force a sale of the house. This would, in effect, throw out collective members, including Adan's adopted queer trans child, onto a rental market that none of us can afford. Sahee wants to stay in the city with her chosen family so she can co-parent their kid. But she cannot afford the rent rates in SF, and she will be forcibly displaced out of the city, which will separate from her from her child who goes to an SF high school. This point is probably not lost on Adán but might actually be an additional motivator for his quick and aggressive legal action.
We are activist queer people of color fighting for our home and asking for your help to fight a legal battle while pressuring Adán for a fair buyout deal where he lets go his share of the house in order to keep our home. We will fight the good fight and put community pressure on him with an anti-eviction campaign. See our FB page about our campaign HOLLY PARK COLLECTIVE. We need an offer not based on this unfair, "gold rush" market that is transforming our city into a rich man's playground, but an offer that will keep our queer home and chosen family intact.
Adan Luevano, our former loved one, an active SF educators' union member, and founder of Queer Qumbia, we allege, is now acting as a pro-eviction landlord. We have spent $6200 in legal fees so far fighting his greed and we need your help to keep the good fight going! Help us keep our family and home intact, help us fund our rising legal fees so we can win this war and save our beloved home and family from the greedy forces of gentrification that want to drive us out from our place in the city!!!
