The Newton Pens Scholarship, a rare commitment
Shawn Newton. This is an amazing story of his selfless endeavor to assist graduating high school seniors entering college. Just to read about what he is doing will make you smile.
Shawn makes first class custom fountain pens. His passion for this art form and the resulting scholarships developed while he was teaching at a public school. At first, good pens were awarded to deserving students who were selected by other teachers in his school. As time went on, his passion for pen making grew and developed along with his passion for helping students succeed. He began raising money for the scholarships through the sale of postcards created by students and a drawing for a custom pen every month.
In 2013, there were two $1,000 scholarships awarded. Then, as his pen making evolved into a profitable business, he left teaching, but the desire to help students not only remained, but grew. For the last two years, he has managed to raise enough for six $1000 scholarships. Last year, he obtained a 501c3 so that tax deductible donations can now be made, but all contributions, no matter how small will be greatly appreciated. It will certainly be put to good use!
As you know, not all high school students who desire a college education qualify for other scholarships. Yet they are good kids and realize their future depends greatly on a successful college career. The Newton Pens Scholarship is designed to help those, and it is open to high school seniors all across the country. The goal is to give students a boost in cash for things they need starting out whether it is for books, food, or even a new set of tires for an old car they use to commute to school. Shawn has two small boys and a wonderful wife who supports his desire to help others. Efforts to collect funds for next year have already begun and not a penny will be wasted. From this thumbnail sketch, you can already guess that he would like to do more which is why I set a high goal for this page. After all, we have high hopes for the success of our young people, so we should expect no less from ourselves. :-)
