Kai's Medical Fund

My name is Jade D'Autrechy and my beautiful snuggle muffin (Kai) is very sick. It all started at the end of June when he began to have stomach upset and started to not finish his food - something that is very odd for him as he is normally a hungry, hungry hippo. We took him to the vet on July 1st, just expecting a stomach bug that could be easily fixed. They instead discovered that he had a 105 degree fever and an infection somewhere in his body, but were unable to pin point the cause. They gave him subcutaneous and intravenous fluids to lower his fever, did bloodwork and sent him home with an antibiotic shot - hoping that he would show improvement within a week.

More than a week passed and Kai went from seeming almost alright to deteriorating in health once again. He stopped grooming himself, almost stopped eating altogether, began grinding his teeth and would hide away - something that is completely abnormal for such a snuggly lap cat. We returned to the vet on the 18th of July and were sent home with an oral antibiotic to give him once a day for 14 days.

It didn't help. None of it helped. Kai had lost so much weight and I began to not see him at all throughout the day. The medicine I was forcing into him was only freaking him out even more. When his breathing became ragged and his eyes began to crust is when I made another appointment for the vet.

Today, the 26th of July, Kai's eyes were both inflammed and his left eye had hemorrhaged so that it looked red - instead of his normal, beautiful blue. Our primary vet was at a loss for being able to help him and referred him to an animal ophthalmologist, which we got into the same day. They looked him over at the eye doctor and immediately referred for us to go over to internal medicine as an emergency.

We found that Kai may have feline infectious peritonitis  - or FIP - which is a viral disease caused when the feline coronavirus mutates to infect the white blood cells and is transported throughout the body. It is fatal. Vets have no way of treating it beyond just keeping the animal 'comfortable' for as long as they can. Then it becomes a question of quality of life.

Right now we have certainly not given up on our baby. Kai is my child and I will do anything possible to make sure that he is taken care of to the best of my ability. We have been doing every test we can think of to rule out this virus, hoping for anything that would at least be curable - such as pneumonia or even cancer. Either way it doesn't look good for Kai.

Unfortunately, doing what I can for my child means expenses. A lot of them. We've already taken a huge hit financially, especially with me being out of work, and we will be paying even more as we chase a definite diagnosis. All I want is for my baby to be alright and back to full health - if at all possible.

Any help in this endeavor will be greatly appreciated. It would mean so much to me and my family. I would love to be able to bring Kai home and know that he'll be alright, for many, many years to come. I cannot imagine my life without him.
