Roger Shew's Fight Against Cancer

We have set up this fundraiser to support our beloved Laguna Beach School District Jazz Band teacher Roger Shew. After 12 years of teaching at the Laguna Beach's High School and Middle School, Roger Shew was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, known as Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors (MPNST). It is a form of cancer of the connective tissue surrounding nerves that has now spread inside of the spinal cord as well. He has undergone three major surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and is currently undergoing immunotherapy. Roger Shew has served as one of the most impactful members of our Laguna Beach community, year after year inspiring students and enriching them with the joys of music. There are no words to truly express what positive impact he has had on my life personally and the lives of so many in our community. His ability to not only be a teacher to every one of his students, but a true friend creates one of the greatest environments for developing a life-long love for music. His passion for teaching and his work ethic go above and beyond the expectations of any music teacher. Teaching Jazz Combo before class and staying after when students need extra help is proof in itself of his drive to better the lives of his students. Any donations to help Roger, his wife Jamie, and his 9-year-old son Simon would be greatly appreciated.

We were so upset to learn about Roger's illness, and now devastated by his passing. We are so grateful for the time, energy and love that Roger invested in our children. I know our son, Caden, found Roger inspiring as a musician, teacher and person. Our hearts go out to his beautiful family.

Roger you were truly one of a kind. I'll remember you as a great husband, and I'm sure you the best Father. I remember the duets we used to play....you were so musical. Today, the world lost the finest of souls. Bless Jamie and Simon, they are the best of families. I'm so sorry. My heart breaks for you. Peace and Love to you all.

Sorry this is late, Jamie! I tried to donate the night before the September 2016 service at Fullerton, but this site was down at the time.

Hi Jamie and Simon, I just learned of Roger's passing. I never met Roger, but I've truly enjoyed his music. I'm a close friend of Dan Delaney, the pianist who played with Roger on many occasions. Though I never met Roger, I sit here in tears grieving his loss. All I can do is offer my sincere condolences and this small contribution to your wellbeing in his memory. His musical spirit will live on. With love, Dennis LaRosee

Hi Jamie, My son, Michael is a junior at LBHS and really admired Roger and his upbeat and friendly manner! The memorial service was very inspirational; to go for your dreams and live with passion, surrounded by your loved ones. You are a beautifully talented singer and gifted speaker. Thank you for sharing the story of Roger's life with us and the love you shared together with Simon. My husband passed away from cancer when my son, Michael was 4 years old. If you ever need someone to talk with, who has been in your shoes, please feel free to call me at anytime 949-246-3603. I started a website www.GriefHopeNetwork.com which may be helpful as well. You and Simon will be in my thoughts and prayers. BIG HUG, Judy Davidson

Our family is truly saddened by the news that Roger Shew passed away. He exhibited that rare quality to inspire others and his impact will live on in those he had taught and knew. We are fortunate to have known Mr. Shew and had the pleasure of learning from him and watching his and his students' performances in Laguna and at Carnegie Hall. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
