Giving Back for Mr. Shongchai Hang

On July 16 2016 Mr. Shongchai Hang was brutally beaten and left for dead. While walking down Hutchinson Street in the Fern Rock section of Philadelphia, Mr. Hang was approached by two men who robbed him of his cell phone and wallet, sprayed his face with mace and then hit him on the forehead with the empty can. As if that wasn’t enough, the two men continued to punch and kick Mr. Hang while on the ground until he was unconscious. To say this horrific crime will have a devastating affect on him is not enough. Shongchai Hang is a long-time community organizer who has dedicated his life to helping those in need. As a Lutheran minister, he helped start the first Hmong congregation in the Philadelphia area and led the first service for members of his native Hmong community in 1989, many of whom were newly resettled refugees. As a Laotian outreach coordinator at the Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Association Coalition (SEMAAC), he provides translation services, making sure community members, especially the elderly, have adequate access to free and low cost healthcare services and is often seen serving senior citizens breakfast on Tuesdays.

Mr. Shongchai Hang is still recovering from his ordeal and as a result will not be able to return to work immediately to help the seniors in his community. We are seeking to raise funds to help him with medical expenses and any other necessities during this time.
