Helping Street Dogs in Mexico
Donation protected
According to recent statistics there are over 13 million dogs living on the street in Mexico.
We are Dave & Monique Woolacott, two Canadians living in Mexico. When we first arrived in July 2016 our intention was to volunteer at a local animal rescue but quickly realized that much more was needed.
In our first GoFundMe Campaign we raised $3500 to build a small shelter in Patzcuaro, Michoacan. We gave the money to Amigosquedejan Huella, a local rescue group that we worked with, to build it as we now live in Tequisquiapan, Queretaro.
We are in constant contact with Amigos and together we have realized that while building shelters does help a small number of animals, sterilization programs and education are the keys to solving this problem long-term. They therefore asked us if the money that was raised could be used to continue and expand their current sterilization program. We wholeheartedly agreed. That money will help sterilize and give needed medical care to over 150 dogs! This will prevent the births of tens of thousands of puppies over the next 5 years alone.
Here in Tequis, we are working with a small but dedicated group (including 2 veterinarians) to build an ongoing sterilization program. We are hoping to acquire a used school bus and convert it to a mobile hospital. We can then go through the different barrios in town to sterilize and treat both dogs on the street and those currently living with families who are not financially able to provide medical care for their pets.
We will also give presentations in the schools to raise awareness among the students, thus building a foundation for responsible pet care. We recently spoke to a group of 120 students in Queretaro and were very well received.
Over the last 15 months we have sterilized and re-homed about 50 dogs and 2 cats. Six of these dogs now live happily in Canada!
In order to continue our work here we need donations for food, medicine and sterilization. Please consider giving even a small amount, as a little goes a long way.
Many Thanks,
Dave and Monique
Please help us reach our goal. It doesn't take much to help an animal in need. To read more about the rescues we are taking in, the vet and the rescue organization, please visit our Facebook page at:
