Our brother and his family really need your help.

Hello family and friends, I am Peter Greaves. Perry William Greaves is my baby brother. This page is for Perry. He and his family need your help.

Perry Greaves is an artist who lives with his wife and son in Brooklyn. The youngest of five children, he is gregarious, charming, and witty; and like so many youngest siblings, he was always ready to do or say something to make the rest of us laugh. He is a loyal brother, and a fierce friend to all who know him.

This July he flew to Austin to help out our Dad after some medical procedures. Our Dad, Roland E. Greaves, a widower, an avid golfer, and an active 87-year-old, needed help with housework, cooking, errands, and driving as he recovered from cataract surgery. Our sister Paula and her husband Herb live near Austin and have been caring for our Dad. They needed some additional help in this instance, and Perry was happy to offer a hand.

On the 10th of July, Perry and Dad were driving home in Dad’s 2005 Suzuki Aerio on Interstate 71.  At about 3:30 pm, the driver of a Lincoln SUV crossed the double yellow line into on-coming traffic while cresting a hill. State troopers investigating the incident say Perry did everything he could do to avoid the impact, as the Lincoln struck the Suzuki at high speed. The cars collided passenger front corner to passenger front corner and our father was killed instantly.

Perry was airlifted to the trauma center in Austin, some 50 miles away. My brother sustained 24 distinct injuries including lacerations and broken bones. He’s already undergone several corrective procedures while in a coma.

The course of Perry’s recovery is unknown. It will be long and the medical attention complex.

The driver who crossed the double yellow line and caused this accident survived. He carried the minimum of liability insurance. The total financial exposure Perry faces in his long and difficult recovery is unknown.

We’d like to get Perry home to Brooklyn and we hear that an ambulance from Austin to New York can run $8,000 to $15,000. The cost of nursing when he gets there will be another matter.

There are additional living expenses for Perry’s family while they are staying with him in Austin. These expenses were certainly not part of the family budget, and the length of time before they can return to Brooklyn is unknown.

I ask you as a devoted brother and bereaved son, won’t you please help Perry and his family? No amount is too small. If you planned to give flowers for my Dad’s funeral, please know that in lieu of that, we’d appreciate your donation to Perry’s family.

On behalf of all of us who are pulling for Perry’s full recovery, and want to get him home, thank you for any amount you are able to give.
