EMT Phyllis Shelley Memorial Sign

Donation protected
On December 14, 1987, EMT Phyllis D. (Hunter) Shelley was killed in the line of duty on an ambulance run on US Highway 50, west of California, Missouri during a major snow storm.  In July 2016, Missouri Senate Bills 625 and 852 were signed into law designating a portion of US Highway 50 from the Moniteau County line west to Mockingbird Road as the Phyllis D. Shelley Memorial Highway.

Provisions of the law stipulate the monies for the memorial highway signs must be privately raised.  The cost of the signage is $2400, and a special account has been established to receive donations toward this goal.

For 29 years, family, colleagues, and friends have sought ways to honor Phyllis and her sacrifice.  Phyllis was active in her church, in the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a substitute history teacher, in addition to her work with EMS.  In 2001, she was honored by the National EMS Memorial Service, and her name was added to the memorial Tree of Life.  She put friends, family, and even complete strangers first and sought to serve others faithfully and fully every day.  She is deeply missed, and this memorial is not only a reminder of her personal sacrifice and an honor for those who love her, but it is also a reminder of the women and men who continue to serve Mid-Missouri communities as EMS and First Responders every day.

Once the funding goal is reached and monies are received by MoDOT, including any additional fees or costs associated with the signage that may occur, any remaining monies will be donated to the California Masonic Lodge #183 for their ongoing charitable efforts in the local community they serve and Phyllis served as part of the Masonic Family.

Not a day goes by that Phyllis is not missed.  Her spirit and love live on in the lives of those she touched during her life.  Thank you for remembering her and honoring those who die in the line of duty.
