School Supplies & Book bag Drive

Recently, I have been asked by a dear friend to participate in her teenage daughter, Caty Villavicencio's, annual school supplies fundraiser.  It's not often I meet a teen with so much passion to make a difference that she takes matters into her own hands.

This school supplies drive started seven years ago when a 10 year-old, Caty, realized not everyone was as fortunate as she was. With the start of every school year, Caty looked forward to going through her school supply list and was blessed enough to purchase each item, starting each new year with a backpack and brand new supplies; however, the awareness that not everyone was as fortunate as she stirred something in Caty. She knew some children in her hometown wouldn't even be able to start school with a pencil case, let alone a whole set of new supplies. She decided this reality wasn’t ok, and she would set out to do something about it.

Caty spearheaded a school supply fundraiser in which she reached out to friends, neighbors and family members for help. Now seven years later, her resolve is the same: to provide children with the basic materials to start the school year prepared and ready to learn. Something as simple as having paper and pencils on the first day of school may not seem like a big deal to most, but it offers hope and the chance to succeed to those who usually go without them. In the words of the beloved Blessed Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” It's not about the magnitude of your deed or the large sum of money you donate, for not all of us are capable of such things, but it is about what you can do and how much love you put into doing it.

I am truly inspired by the love, dedication and courage Caty has put into this project so diligently these last seven years. May she be an example to us all that we can all do “small things” with great love. If you are interested in supporting her drive or this inspiring cause, please contact me for more information or you can donate directly via GoFundMe.  We are also accepting all school supplies and book bags.

Blessings always!
