Who we are

Hannah: writer, photographer, traveler, superhero, chocolate-eater.

Sarah: swimmer, traveler, superhero, general kick ass extraordinaire.

Who/what we’re raising money for

In the town of Mirebalais, Haiti there is a school building constructed out of concrete. This building is to be the education central of approximately 270 students who are currently enrolled for the school year. This education is provided to the students free of charge and includes uniforms, school supplies and lunch. The goal of the teachers and founders of this school is to educate and motivate a new generation of world changers, more specifically, Haiti changers, through basic education and vital life skills such as hygiene and nutrition. This school is Grace Academy and this building has no roof.

Enter Miss Sarah Dealy and her roommate Hannah Farris. This past month Hannah had the opportunity to visit the school site and see for herself the students and staff members who are eager to make an impact. Her only job was to document and observe but she left Haiti with a desire to do much, much more. Last summer Sarah raised over $7,000 for a cause in Bellingham, WA by swimming across Bellingham Bay (Approximately 8 miles, 45 degrees). As soon as she heard of the beautiful Lake Wallowa, she knew she needed to swim it; her only dilemma was “to raise money for what?” When she heard about Grace Academy and the need for funding to finish the school a logical conclusion was drawn.

How the money will be used

$15,000 is needed to add the roof and complete the school; however, our goal is to go above and beyond that amount as the school also needs money for supplies and food. Any amount we receive over the budget of the roof will be put towards buying paper, pencils, books, and other supplies necessary to educate the children.

How soon we’ll need the funds

We’d like to see the amount raised by the time Sarah has finished swimming Lake Wallowa. The sooner the money is raised, the sooner the school can be completed, the sooner the kids can start learning.

Why this means so much to us

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.” We believe this is a worthy cause because we have both experienced the benefits that come with a good education, and understand that the way to create change is to create education. Giving Haiti another place to study and learn is giving them the opportunity to change their country from the inside out.

How thankful we/the kids will be

Any amount you give will make us profoundly grateful! The more money is raised, the easier it is for Sarah to endure the cold and fatigue of endurance swimming. If you cannot afford a donation, or even if you can, we would really appreciate if you share this link and tell others about our cause.
