Help Robyn Rebuild And Recover
Robyn (half of West philly's beloved Black Orchid Foods) had a fire in her home this morning (July 11, 2016) and suffered some pretty gnarly burns and so did her house. Robyn is one of the most generous, caring, and welcoming people I have ever met, and she has opened her home to feed hundreds, if not thousands, of Philadelphians with her "meals to go" events over the years. We have all benefited from Robyn's presence in our community whether it's through eating her food, at the neighborhood events she organizes, or through her activism. Robyn is also way too proud to ask for money ever, so I am doing this with the consent of her partner, Mike. The $$ amount may change, as there hasn't been an insurance appraisal yet, but from what Robyn described to me it sounds as though their kitchen will need to be ripped down to the studs and rebuilt due to the fire damage. New ceiling, walls, cabinets, possibly appliances. A lot of stuff melted too. Additionally, Robyn's recovery is estimated at two weeks right now, which means 2 weeks of not being able to cook. I'm estimating their costs at ~$15,000 right now (insurance will cover some but not all of their rebuilding costs, and insurance will cover some but not all medical costs), but that will change and I'll update accordingly based on what Mike and Robyn request. What's important to know is that Robyn is expected to make a full recovery! And all of the other roommates (including the cats) are safe. She doesn't have a smartphone so no internet access right now, but feel free to message me for her number. Hearing from friends would brighten her day!
My burn doctors said I'm healing faster than expected & I'm able to remove almost all of my bandages! Now it's just topical treatments & a year of sun dodging to fully heal. They said one mosquito bite on the burn area & the pigment will stay a different color in that area permanently, so that'll be a challenge. The insurance company finally came! That will either be the end of their process or they can choose to come back and do an itemized list of destruction in person. They can also choose to send a fire inspector to see if we're telling the truth on how the fire started. Hopefully we'll find out if they're doing either soon cuz we still aren't allowed to touch the kitchen until they do. Slowly the ball rolls. We are forever grateful for all of your support! Thank you!
I was well taken care of in the hospital and any time things seem stressful there were messages of friendly support to turn to. Last night I came home from the hospital and saw the staggering amount of damage in our home and hit an emotional wall. I knew most of our kitchen was gone but the smoke damage never occurred to me. I went from being a a Burn Unit where people had to wear gloves & a new smock every time they entered my room to protect against infection to a house where every single thing we own is covered in some amount of sot. The insurance company hasn't helped, they keep changing the date of inspection, and we can not clean or begin demo until they've witnessed the damages. The only thing that is keeping me going at this point is the unbelievable amount of support we have received. It is staggering how many people how expressed their love and concern. And this fundraiser, I mean we don't have a car anymore, I do not know how we could have afforded for Mike to even visit me in the hospital without all of your help. The medical bills and repairs to our home, we still do not know how much all of it will be but we no longer have to fret over making the deductibles because of all of your help. Because of you, instead of crying in the hospital with worry, I could concentrate on healing and knew we would be okay. All of you have given me the confidence, security and energy to get through this challenge and for that I will be forever grateful. I know we can do this because of you. Our first purchase was new fire extinguishers. Thank you! All our love, Robyn & Mike
I can see out of both eyes now a little. Won't need any surgery & they said I'll be able to leave the burn unit by the end of the week! They redid my bandages so I'm only half a mummy now. I haven't gotten to read much online yet but Mike's been telling me about all the love. THANK YOU!
