Our son, Nathaniel, was born 3 months early with a rare condition that nearly took his life. He spent 99 days in the NICU and at the very beginning we didn't know whether he would live or die. Having a baby in the NICU is extremely stressful but we had the added stress of living far from the hospital with 3 other children who needed our love and care too. As a parent of a micro-preemie, I can tell you how tremendously difficult it is to manage day to day life, much less worry over finances. We almost lost hope.
Nathaniel had a condition that affects 1 in 2000 pregnancies and only 1 in 5 survive...He's 1 of a kind! He battled so many things. His medical and therapy teams have told us that he is doing so well because he had our constant contact. We know from experience how important it is for families to visit their babies! We spent an average of $80 a week to see our son every day and we only lived an hour away.
Not every family is this fortunate. We witnessed many babies left without kangaroo care (skin to skin bonding time that is proven to increase the health and wellness of sick children). Some parents lived so far away they could only visit their baby on the weekends or once every few weeks!!!!
Now that our son is nearing his 1st birthday we've decided to host a fundraiser instead of a typical birthday celebration. We want to give to NICU parents who are facing the same difficulties we faced!! They already have enough weight on their shoulders, they shouldn't have to worry about where their next tank of gas or meal is coming from too!
Our event is called Strive 2 Thrive because these babies strive to survive every moment of their lives and we are striving to help NICU families THRIVE...not just survive. We're hosting a 2 mile fun run in Marion TX on October 29th with a Rose Memorial to honor the children who left too soon. We plan to serve lunch afterwards for $5 a plate and have music and games. We'll also be giving every participant an information packet full of helpful knowledge about prematurity, infant loss, and stillbirth and what they can do to prevent it. We need money for t-shirts, run insurance, food, water, and flyers!
We'll be so thankful to anyone who gives to make this event a reality that we have a rewards system in place.
STAR - a donation of at least $15 puts your name or your company name on the information packet given to every participant so they are made aware who helped make this all possible!
Bronze - a donation of at least $150 - puts your name or your company name on our flyers passed around town, and you will be on our information packet given to every participant.
Silver - a donation of at least $300 - puts your name or your company name on the back of the official participant T-Shirts! Plus everything in Bronze and STAR.
Gold - a donation of at least $500 - puts your name or your company name on Strive 2 Thrive banners!! We will have a banner over the registration booth and a banner on the starting line. 2 opportunities for participants to 2 see how involved you were at making the run a reality!! You will of course still be on the flyers, information packets, and official T-Shirts.
