Help My Mom Replace Her Stolen Car

Donation protected
My Mom, Puma Perl, is a pretty well known poet and performer. In other words, she has a very limited income. Several days ago, her beloved 1998 Nissan Maxima, 129K and all, was stolen. Adding insult to injury, she had just sunk almost $1,000 into maintenance and issues she’d been procrastinating about fixing; she also had a carton of her books in the trunk along with the usual assortment of tools, safety kits, and a boom box and bag of cassettes for days when the radio didn’t work. It’s proven without a doubt that the car is gone.

Unbelievably, two days later, her wallet, containing cash and ID, was stolen, so it's been quite a ride for her, albeit without a car.

She not only loves cars and treats them as family members. In addition, it is truly necessary that she have a car.  My mom lives in the southernmost, easternmost, corner of Manhattan. It’s half mile to the F train, and the buses run infrequently at night. As a performer, she is out late and the stretch between the subway and her place is desolate, and uphill. She often carries books and other materials and has already injured herself toting a heavy load.

Puma didn’t want me to do this. She hates asking for anything, but her friends convinced her because she’s supported so many other fundraisers, among other reasons. If I had the funds to buy her a new car, this effort would not be necessary. She uses her car not only to get to gigs and events in many areas, but she shows up for people. When my dog, Diva, who she loves even more than she loves the car needed surgery, she drove her to every appointment and used the car to transport her every day, despite re-injuring her back lifting a 50 pound pit in and out of the back seat. A couple of years ago, when I learned my apartment was on fire, she sped out there in record time, and made numerous trips looking for whatever could be salvaged and helping Diva and myself through two moves. I’ve known her to help her friends not only by driving to gigs, but by rescuing animals, taking people to the hospital, and showing up wherever needed.

That is what my mom does. She shows up. I’m hoping our friends how up for her. As a writer, she insisted in being heard in this missive: “My Max was like me,” she says. “ A lot of mileage, a little beat up on the outside, but still running and pretty good on the inside. There are causes more dire than mine. My hope is that if you feel that way you will contribute to one of them. My promise is to always pay it forward. Thank you.”

Our goal amount of $10,000 should cover a decent used car that won’t be constantly in the shop, insurance, and maybe a dent in the credit card debt for the items that were lost and the waste of money on recent car maintenance. No donation is too small, and if you cannot donate at all, please send a good vibe. That’s worth a lot, too. Thank you.
