 DECORAH, IA
During the evening of August 23, 2016, Decorah, Iowa received reports of 7" to 10" in rain in about an eight-hour time period. Josh and Miranda McGrath (and their three children, ages 4, 5, and 9) were in their home that they had moved into a few months ago. During the night, the Upper Iowa River rose from 3' to nearly 14' and the flood waters broke through a window and came rushing into their home. Josh and Miranda heard the screams of their 5-year-old daugher who was in the basement and standing on her mattress and by the time her mom got to her. Luckily, she stayed on her mattress (which was floating) and didn't try to wade through the rushing water that would have likely pulled her under. Their 4-year-old daughter, who normally also sleeps in the basement, had chosen to sleep upstairs with her parents because of the loud thunder. She would have been in the room where the window broke and rushed away by the water had she been sleeping in her room. The family is safe, but left with only their clothes they had on. The insurance company has already said that they are not eligible to collect any insurance because their policy doesn't include flood insurance, but their house is also not in the flood plane.

This fund has been set up to help Josh and Miranda (and their three children) with the repair and replacement of all the items damaged in their house and vehicle by the flood. Thank you for considering a donation.

So many things to share that I'm afraid I don't know where to start.

As part of FEMA's Hazard Mitigation program the county can request money to buy out certain homes located in the flood plain with extensive damage.....The Winnishiek County Board of supervisors has voted to submit an application to purchase our home and a few others within the county. While this is amazing news it's not a guarantee and it is a very time consuming process.

I have spoken with Senator Chuck Grassley as well as Senator Joni Ernst who have both taken on the task of assisting our family to push this buyout to take as little time as necessary because let's face it......this is our only way out of an inevitable foreclosure otherwise.

With over $120,000 in physical damages and the emotional turmoil this has taken on our children (Lailyn in particular who is still having nightmares) there is no way for us to even consider going back.

That being said there IS more good news to share! We have been working closely with our local bank and have been approved for a "Second home" mortgage and have started the pursuit of "Rebuilding" our lives! We purchased a piece of land as high on the hill as we could find and ordered a modular home from Design Homes!

This "second mortgage" doesn't allow much wiggle room with the flooded house still on our credit report and debt to income ratio. BUT thanks to you ALL we have enough of a down payment to move forward with a beautiful little 4 bedroom home.

During this time we have been able to replace all of our furniture, both of our vehicles, and all of our clothing. What an amazing support system we have!

I have said it before and I will say it again......Thank you will never cover what we want to say to you but it's the only thing we've got.......so THANK YOU!

Please feel free to re-share this good news and possibly reach others willing to assist us in our continued efforts to move forward!
New lot!

Hi everyone! Miranda here.... Stealing a quiet moment to send our deepest appreciation and thanks to each and every one of you who have supported us during this trying time. Around 2:30 Saturday (8/27/16) afternoon we made the difficult decision to shut off the pumps and walk away from our home. With major structural damage in the basement and a cracking foundation there is nothing to salvage. Being in the basement for the first time since the flood was very difficult for me yesterday. Seeing the exact area where Lailyn and I were trapped by the mattress in the doorway (which is still there!) was beyond emotional. I can only thank GOD for saving us that morning.
The McGraths home is not salvageable.
