Family, Friends and Fellow Bernie Supporters,
I am proud to say I was elected in the 13th Congressional District of Illinois to serve as a Delegate for Senator Bernie Sanders! This is more than just a ballot victory; this is exactly what Bernie is working for - a political revolution that puts everyday citizens at the table to make decisions about our nation's political direction.
Unfortunately, our political system is designed to benefit the wealthy and going to the Democratic National Convention as a delegate costs around $5,400.
I need your help to get there.
My journey from the South Side of Chicago to Urbana, Illinois is a life that has traversed drug addiction, sobriety, and activism which makes me a strong advocate for Ending The Failed Drug War that is a war on poor people and people of color, and has filled our prisons with non-violent offenders.
As a Building Service Worker at the University of Illinois for the past 15 years, I have been an active member of SEIU Local 73. As a Steward, Chief Steward, Vice-President, Chapter President, and even as the lead negotiator during contract negotiations, I have experienced first-hand the power and dignity of speaking truth to power. I have fought and will continue to fight to protect: living wages, collective bargaining rights, and the pensions of working Americans. In that vein, I am also a Trustee of the State University Retirement System Fund, where I push for responsible and ethical investing. I advocate for the protection of the environment, diverse Corporate Boards and Minority, Women, and Veteran-Owned Businesses.
I have served as a Community Organizer for 14 years working on issues of criminal justice reform, environmental justice, and educational access. It is imperative we end the disparate sentencing of African Americans, stop the militarization of police departments, ban fracking, educate about climate control, fund HeadStart and other programs for youth, so they are not behind on their first day of kindergarten.
But I'm most proud of my role as a husband, father, brother and son. It is because of the people I love that I am dedicated to doing my part to better the future of our nation.
I shared these things with you because it dawned on me that I’m about to advocate and organize on a National Stage on behalf of We, The People!
I’m ready to go to Philadelphia and represent "a" voice of Bernie supporters by supporting a progressive Democratic Platform that will fight the TPP, end the game of Super Delegates and continue the progressive presence that will hold Hillary's feet to the fire.
The Political Revolution Must Stay Active! An Agenda, Contract, or Platform, Is Only As Strong As The People Who Enforce It!
