My name is Mr. Karp and I am a 3/4th combo teacher in Santa Maria, California. I am raising money to put an aquarium in my class. The aquarium will be used to educate students about the different types of creatures in the world (vertabrates, invertabrates, arthrapods, etc.). The aquarium will also be used to teach students about the importance of our oceans, the dangers facing them and the reasons we need to protect them. Lastly, the aquarium will be used as a stress release agent in the classroom.
My students are primarily Hispanic and Latino and come from lower income families, many oh whom are below the poverty level. Many of my students lack basic supplies and have never been further than 30 miles from their home. Most have never been to see the ocean. Most of the students at the school are also English learners. My students face many problems both at home and at school.
The funds I am trying to raise will help to buy all of the necessary supplies for the aquarium including: the aquarium, filtration, lighting, test equipment, substrate, livestock, food, etc.
Our school year starts up again in August and I would like to have the tank setup and cycled by the time the year starts so getting the money as soon as possible would be best.
This project means so much to me because I love fish, the ocean and the wonderful things that live there. I want to be able to share my hobby with my students while being able to teach them about the importance of protecting our wildlife along with valuble science lessons.
