Well, it finally happened. I knew this day would come eventually. The other day I upgraded the server that ClickYourBlock.com runs on to the latest versions of PHP and mySQL, the software that runs the server and the software that runs ClickYourBlock is not compatible with it.
The software that runs ClickYourBlock is vBulletin. The version we've been running all these years came out in 2005. It's 11 years old and simply no longer compatible with the software that runs modern servers. And it's important to keep the server software up-to-date to prevent security problems. I'm actually surprised (shocked really!) when I realized how old the version of vBulletin was that we've been running - because we've NEVER had a security problem with it! Usually old software is ripe with potential for hackers and abuse.
The only solution is to buy the latest version of vBulletin and pay them to upgrade the site. I've written them to ask if they can even upgrade from the version we have to the newest version and how much it would cost. And I found out we can't upgrade from this version to the newest version, because it's too old. So we would have to upgrade to an intermediate version and then to the current version.
Normally, I would be happy to do this, but vBulletin is a very expensive product. They charge $275 for the new version and $150 for the upgrade service.
I don't know how important this site is to you guys, but I've kept it up and running all these years because I could see people were still using it and enjoying it. But at this point, the only way I'll be able to keep it up and running is if you guys could contribute to fund it.
Unfortunately though, I can't afford to spend anything on this site since I don't earn any revenue from it. Well, except for about 17 cents a month from the Google ads!
So, I thought I'd ask you guys if you would like to chip in a bit for it and if we can raise enough to pay for it all, I'll get it back up and running.
The total cost for the upgrade is $425 so that's our goal.
We've already had one member write to me personally to say he would give $100 so that's a great start! If you can contribute, please do so here so I can get an idea if we'll get enough to pay for everything. If we don't raise enough and I'm unable to do it, I will instruct GoFundMe not to charge anyone.
