Orphan Foal Phoenix

Hello, I am baby Phoenix. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF) is a 501 c 3 not for profit whose mission is to conserve and protect me and my rare and ancient relatives who are a rare and ancient strain of Colonial Spanish Mustangs living wild on a barrier island called the Outer Banks of Corolla.  On July 2, at 3:30 p.m. one of their staff was flagged down on the beach by a group of young people who had been riding ATVs on the Currituck Wildlife Refuge, They said they had come upon and wild mare that could not get up and that she had a baby by her side. That baby was me and the mare was my mama.

The Director of the CWHF came to where my mama was laying and she and a very strong off duty police officer tried their hardest to get my mama up but she could not stand. It was so hot, the flies were biting her and me and I was hungry, thirsty, and very afraid.  She had been struggling to get up herself but could only move her legs and head. The Director had already called the veterinarians who advise the Fund and treat us when needed. Dr. Sangenario had to drive a very long way in very heavy traffic but the humans stayed with my mama and me. I licked my mama's face. I tried to nurse but my mama kicked at me and I didn't know what to do. The Director put fly spray on my mama so that the flies that were biting her relentlessly would stop. A Sheriff's Deputy named Evelyn gave the Director her water so that my mama could have a drink. Another Sheriff's Deputy stayed with my mama so that the Director could drive back down the beach and meet the vet. By now it was getting dark.

When the vet came, he examined my mama throughly determined that my mama had a spinal injury and could not be saved.  I didn't know what to do.  It was 9:30 at night and I no longer had a mama. I had never seen humans except from a long distance and since I am a prey animal, I was very afraid of them. But I wanted to be near mama. When I came close enough, the vet did something to me and I got very sleepy. When I woke up, I was in the back seat of a truck. The Director and her husband drove me to a East Coast Equestrian Training Center in Virginia Beach.  We arrived at 1:30 in the morning. There is a mare next to me that loves babies. I hope that she will love me soon.

Please help the nonprofit Corolla Wild Horse Fund save me. So many people helped to save my relative Baby William. I hope that you will help me too. I want to grow up and be as strong and brave as William. My name is Phoenix, symbolic for rising from a tragedy. One life lost but a chance to save another.
