Life Raft for Smutty

Donation protected
Our friends bring joy, they bring laughter, they bring flavor and color to our often dull lives. If we are lucky, there is always one friend who never fails to make us smile, who is always there with a witty quip, a story that takes our mind off the problem of the day. We marvel how that one friend always manages to find the bright side, always manages to look sharp, always has some crazy cool project on the horizon.

For a lot of us, that friend is Smutty Smiff – he’s the guy with the perfect quiff riding the giant stand-up bass in a leopard trimmed suit, he’s the guy who flirts with your gal and she flirts back but you aren’t angry… no… you’re flattered because that means your gal is hot… and he just complimented you on your shoes.

Smutty makes strangers, and friends, alike feel special, and when he tells you of his life in NY or on the road, you listen even if you’ve heard the story before.

People love Smutty, they want to be Smutty, they imagine how carefree and easy his life must be.  Only his life has never been carefree and it’s never been easy. Smutty has been living with bipolar disorder for most of his life. He’s been acting in a play of his own making, playing the character he created – Smutty Smiff – in order to disguise the despair, the heartbreak, the self-defeating thoughts. He’s been faking his way through life by pasting on a smile, a little eyeliner and a lot of hair grease.

A few months ago, after being unsuccessfully treated for bipolar disorder in Iceland where he’d settled to raise his two young sons, he realized his best hope for mental health care was in the U.S. and that his ability to support his children was far greater here than in Iceland.

Smutty is currently in one of the best mental health facilities on the West Coast. He’s been properly diagnosed and is receiving medication and counseling.  He's done so well, that he will be released to the care of friends in the next few days. He is writing a new script – one based in reality, one that allows him to be human, with emotions, a five o’clock shadow and a wrinkle or two.  And to do this, he needs help…your help.

There is a plan in place for Smutty with responsible people around him to provide emotional support on his journey to a stable life. Upon release, Smutty will be settled in Los Angeles, get back to playing bass and entertaining us once again but he needs a financial lifeline to cover medication and living expenses until the doctor signs off on his working. That could be in three months, it could be six months, it could even be nine months – a life time of untreated illness doesn’t go away overnight.

The fund will be administered by a caretaker to ensure it is used for the purpose intended and nothing else.

We’ll use this page to update folks on his progress – Smutty’s friends are a global community of fantastic people and we need to make it easy for folks to stay in touch.

On behalf of Stephen Dennis “Smutty” Smith, we wish you many thanks and much love.
