Jim and Kyrie Memorial Fund

Donation protected
Our names are Leann Mitsui and Nicole Botticelli and we are writing in support of our neighbors and friends, Jim Keefe and Kyrie who were found deceased by four volunteers this morning, June 29th at 8am due to the Border Fires here in Potrero. The volunteers went around deputies, hiked across a neighboring property to reach a hillside behind the Keefe home, and found the bodies huddled together amid some rocks. We and other residents had been asking the Sheriff’s Department for about a week to look for the couple and were met with resistance. Deputies told us to stay off the property, and that they couldn’t do a welfare check because they weren’t “invited.”

Keefe and Kyrie led reclusive lives on the property along state Route 94. They lived completely off the grid and were seen as a happy, free spirited couple. We are not aware of any family members and no one else has reported them missing.  The couple had 11 dogs for whom they cared for very much and we knew something was wrong when they did not return after the evacuation was lifted. As we continued to ask for help and filed a missing persons report, we fed and watered the dogs that were left (some had passed away from starvation and others who fled were later rescued).

Our hope is that we can raise enough money to hold a memorial service to honor our friends. In addition, this fund is to assist in adopting out the remaining dogs. We appreciate any donations or help finding good homes for their dogs.
