DRAWING ON THE NORTH is the the Art Gallery of Sudbury's (AGS) capital campaign raising funds for a purpose-built building - The Franklin Carmichael Sudbury. With this campaign, the AGS is making a bold commitment to change. After five decades of operation, it wants to establish itself as a destination tourist and cultural attraction in Northern Ontario, in a purpose-built building, showcasing the city's outstanding collection of art, and creating memorable experiences in art for all who visit or participate in its programs. The new facility will be named in honour of Franklin Carmichael - founding member of the Group of Seven.
The Art Gallery of Sudbury now stands at the threshold of one of the most exciting moments in our history. After more than a decade of research and planning for a new Gallery, we are moving forward with our vision to create an innovative and inspiring visual art gallery that enriches lives and plays a pivotal role in establishing Greater Sudbury's reputation as a vibrant, creative, and desirable place to live, work and visit.
The new Franklin Carmichael Sudbury will be a purpose-built art museum that creates and strengthens links between artists, contemporary and historical art, and diverse communities throughout the city, province and around the world. The Gallery will tie the past to the present, make visible Sudbury's connections to other places in the world, and position Sudbury as one of the most important centres for contemporary art production. There are many steps ahead, but everything we've achieved to date is thanks to the commitment of artists, our members, donors, volunteers and our many other tireless supporters. We thank them, and you, for continuing to drive us forward.
The project is perfectly timed to coincide with other major projects that rejuvenate the downtown. The City of Greater Sudbury recently developed a long-term 10-year master plan to revitalize its downtown core. As Northern Ontario's largest city and the gateway that connects Southern Ontario to the west, Greater Sudbury is aiming to solidify itself as the centre of activity and culture within the area.
Now is the time to DRAW ON THE NORTH, draw on our strengths and draw on you to support this exciting project.
