Hello there! I am a 6th grade Social Studies/Language Arts teacher for Portland Public Schools. I am raising money to purchase standing desks for my students in the classroom for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year. Right now in the United States, obesity, ADD/ADHD diagnoses, chronic illnesses, and anxiety and depression are on the rise for our children. For the first time in the modern world, our children are predicted to live shorter lives than their parents.
One way to combat this is to forgo our sedentary lifestyles and embrace the world of standing! Standing can increase your caloric burn by 10-15% daily, lowering your risk for things such as heart disease, and diabetes, depression and anxiety, but can also increase your productivity by 12%.
As our schools continue to move towards standardized tests and uniformity, our students will suffer due to shortened recess times (currently at 15 minutes a day for my 6th graders) and more time spent sitting in a chair. Please consider donating to help purchase standing desks, as these students are our own communities future. I cannot tell you how much this would mean to the students and to me. Thank you.
