Catch the Tire Slashing Vandals

Donation protected
The Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation (AASF) was outraged by the felony vandalism that occurred at Merrill Field early in June. If there is anyone out there that did not hear of the tire slashing I would be surprised. But here it is: very early one morning, the most despicable thugs slashed the tires of 87 aircraft parked on the Merrill ramps. They left behind a truly heart breaking picture of our airplanes slumped on the asphalt.

What type of low life person would do something like this? This is not just mischief this is a felony. We all know the cost of aircraft tires and having to replace them for anything other than wear and tear is criminally outrageous. By the time I am writing this, Anchorage Police Department (APD) has not made any arrests.

In the meantime, the Safety Foundation has been looking into how we might raise money for a reward for the apprehension of these low lifes. A reward is not generally part of our core mission but this is different and vandalism like this could very easily spill over into sabotage of aircraft and subsequent aircraft non air worthiness and worse.

In deciding to take this step the Foundation considered the fact that no other organization appeared ready to take this step. But it needs to be done to show these thugs that as a group we are not going to stand for this.

I am appealing to each of you to make a donation, however large. While I personally was not affected by the vandalism, I am writing a check for $87 as my contribution to get this started. Other Board members have agreed to do the same.

One last explanation: If for some reason the reward fund and the money you donated does not lead to the arrest of the criminals, that money will be moved into our General Fund and be used to support the other efforts of the Safety Foundation. Hopefully you can make a contribution to this reward effort and we can send a strong message to these despicable vandals. Let’s help APD find these perps.

Some have asked for more details on who the Alaskan Aviation Safety Foundation (AASF) is and why we are involved in this campaign. AASF is a state wide Alaskan 501(c)3, non profit organization devoted solely to aviation safety outreach and education. Our board members are all unsalaried and we are supported entirely by membership and donations. We receive no government subsidy or grants,

We are raising funds solely to help find and arrest the criminals who slashed the tires on 87 aircraft at Merrill Field in Anchorage, AK. We, the foundation, are made up of pilots, mechanics, dispatchers and many other inidividuals and businesses in the aviation field. We all share a dedication to aviation safety. This vandalism threatens the safety and security of not only the affected individuals but aviation in Alaska itself, We are working with the Anchorage Police Crime Stoppers. When an arrest is made the reward will go to the individual or indivuals who helped APD track down the culprits.
