Words cannot describe how difficult the last month has been for the King family.
It all began in March when my father, David King, and I went on a skiing trip in Utah. My dad has always been a healthy, strong, and athletic individual; he competes in 5k’s, lifts, and eats right regularly. He is an expert skier, and he always wears a helmet. But on March 22nd, 2016, none of these precautions saved him from harm.
It was our first day out on the slopes when my father fell, the consequences of which have been devastating. David was rushed in for emergency surgery to stop the bleeding from his brain; it went well and the prognosis was good. But a few days later, we watched helplessly as he slipped into a coma.
My dad is a fighter, we just needed to give him the chance to fight, so we agreed to a second emergency procedure. Our hopes and prayers were answered as he began to slowly improve thereafter. As he continued to recover, we thought he would be able to fly home soon for rehab. In a tragic turn of events, he suddenly fell back into a coma.
The doctors are not sure why he declined, but they still believe that he will pull through and recommend that he be moved to a specialized nuerocritical care hospital. The best one is Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore, which is thankfully close to our home in Delaware. A specialist in neurology there has accepted his case, so we are trying to move him as soon as possible. Moving David to Johns Hopkins will give him the best possible chance at recovery, plus being closer to family allows him to receive more support from his loved ones who are heartbroken being apart from him in this time of need.
The only way to get David to Johns Hopkins is by a medical transportation flight. This will, of course, be an additional cost to the mounting medical bills and other expenses already incurred. We cannot predict the true end cost of all of this, but we can tell you that we have over $10,000 in medical bills thus far, and that the medical transportation flight will cost about an additional $20,000, which the insurance company told us they will not cover. Once again, this is not including the future cost for an unpredictable number of months of rehab to follow.
That being said, we could really use your help. Please consider donating to help us get David to the proper facility for treatment, and back to those who love him. Any amount will help. Your donation would mean the world to David and our family. We can never thank you enough for the difference even the smallest donation will make. We have been overwhelmed with gratitude for the kindness, prayers, and support we have already received. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
