After 3000+ database issues, multiple CMS failures, and a plethora of other issues, I give up on upgrading to v5 this weekend.
Here's the secure v4. I took it down in a hurry as the old v4 was fairly wide open to get the upgrade in. The servers are now secure.
I'm going to leave this up as it is a sunny day, and I have some work to do.
I'll try the v5 upgrade soon. I want to go there for the publishing suite and other options I need to launch the revisions many have asked for.
For now, welcome back.
PS - I need several bottles of vodka or rum to forget this nonsense!!!!
PPS the email@example.com address is back up.
Thank you for your support and patience. I will say it again, I am humbled.
The new version is up and running. This is just the forum. The whole Content Management Server is to come.
I also have one more upgrade to do to version 5.2.2 That will come in the next couple of days as I let this version stabilize.
I will gladly take suggestions via Private Message or in this thread.
I will let this version stabilize over the weekend, and then upgrade to vBulletin 5.2.2.
I will also post more once I complete some back end work.
The site has no funding other than RichardS paying for everything personally. For those who don't know, RichardS lost his leg last year, has just received an astronomical bill for a prosthetic, and has recently been laid off so he can't keep paying for C2E himself. There weren't any ads on the site, so there's no income generated by the site (and perhaps long term funding needs to be revisited if we are able to crowd fund enough to reopen the site). C2E is a "free site" (and everyone seems to think that the internet is free) but it wasn't free for RichardS, who spent REAL time moderating for no compensation, AND paid REAL money to give us all a space to share our ideas, thoughts, and passion for Edmonton. Like an anonymous poster said with his/her donation: "I challenge all posters to a minimum contribution of a penny a post. Lurkers, I challenge you to contribute $25 for each year you have been peeking"
Wondering if fundraising has passed $8,000 , so how long will this site C2E going to last ?? I love this site because I wanted to see the progress of downtown Edmonton since I have left for Ontario last May 2015. I admit I do miss Edmonton very much but my family has to come first as they want me back home to spend tons of time with me. long live C2E !! you all know me as jagators63 :)
@Chris: Thank you for this. I have been waiting for a chance to contribute for a very long time. It's not fair that someone should both field the expense and the hassle. If I could take on some of the hassle I'd be pleased but I doubt I'm the right person. However, I do have a good job for now and I'm good with sending the money. @Richard: Speaking just for myself, I'm not meaning to pressure you into getting into harness again. As far as I'm concerned, you're free to consider my piddly donation as partial payment for the many hours of enjoyment and aggravation I've had in the past.
Thank you everyone for your words of support. I almost have everything completed on the technical upgrade. The funds raised here will be used to solicit designers to transform the basic templates into something much more user friendly. For right now, getting past 10+ years of missed upgrades is proving as hard as I feared. It is almost as frustrating as a Medwards v IanO back and forth! The piece the upgrade keeps snagging on is all the private messages. I knew that many users had C2E as their own email system, but I never knew how many!!!! Seriously, thank you.
I haven't heard any update for 2 days now
Message on the site now from Richard stating he is in the process of upgrading the forums to the latest vBulletin version.
Good job Edmonton meeting the goal.
I'm going completely stir crazy without this site.... we need to get this up again ASAP
C2E is up but forum is still down
I don't want to sound like the gloomy Gus here and I know that my comment will raise responses faster than bad architecture, but should those who fund the C2E have some advantage? For example there is a forum, Pentax actually, that anyone can use but those who fund it also have access to post classified ads in the market place. Another possibility is that those who provide funding get an ad free experience. There is no limit but there should be something. I wouldn't want it restricted to those who fund it because then you lose new members and a variety of opinions. Just a thought. When funding in this way, there should be something for the funding providers over those who don't fund it.
I would suggest a donatae button Richard on the knew site it will help you keep costs under control . As you can tell people really appreciate this site.
Hi all envaneo here, unable to make donations being unemployed, and this breaks my heart. I really enjoyed this forum. Connect 2 Edmonton has been a huge part of my life. My I just hope c2e members that are better off then myself can rally behind Richard for the work he has been doing. Can somebody recommend Richard to the City of Edmonton for a service award of some kind? Who here can make that happen? There are so many posters I will miss if this is the end of c2e. Can there be a 11th hour stay of execution of some kind by poster here more tech savvy then myself to make it happen? I hope in my heart there will be a Connect 2 Edmonton 2.0 soon. Is Yuku still up and running? Too all of those who took the time to reply to my posts and helped to educate me on various topics here I thank you. Some notables, Ian0 who always was so generous with his time and responses, a class act. Top Dawg, always made me smile. Noodle, Edmonton PRT, Eve B, Mohunter, Drumbones, EdmontonCowbow, Legion, Chris Vazquez, Gord Lacey and many more, I thank you. I hope to hear from all of you again soon at a c2e Jim Shannon aka envaneo.
@Lis: That's a great idea! I just set this up to quickly raise funds for the short term. I think it would be up to Richard how he would like to proceed with long-term funding.
@Mary: This money is going directly to the Admin of the site, RichardS. It will help him with hosting costs and continuing this site forward as he sees fit.
What would this money be used for? I would be happy to donate but don't understand where the money would go and if money is the only thing keeping the forum from staying open.
