Education for Yoselin

Donation protected

Yoselin's life story is a sad one, yet one with much hope.

"You have been in our lives when we needed you the most," says her mother., referring to the Guatemala Stove Project, a small Perth, Ontario-based charity. "You have made a huge change in our lives."

At just 16 years old Yoselin has been shifted from home to home, living in a series of precarious situations. Her father died when she was just five years old and the family lost everything. Her mother works and lives in a place where street children are cared for.  She is not able to afford her own home or care for her daughter the way she would like to, Until the Guatemala Stove Project began helping Yoselin, through the Cantel Scholarship Fund, she lived first with her elderly grandparents and then with unreliable relatives.

The Guatemalan government only funds education until grade 6. But we know that with little education, and without the financial support of a family, Yoselin's future will be bleak.

In order to attend school in Xela, Yoselin now resides in a family home where female students stay while they study. It is a friendly place and her mother tries to visit as often as she can, sometimes even spending the night with her daughter, something she has not had much opportunity to do.

While the Guatemala Stove Project believes in Yoselin, it is becoming more and more difficult to meet the financial requirements.

Yoselin is in grade 11 and taking a Business Administration degree with a specialization in human resources. Recently, she began an internship at a bank, which she likes very much. Currently, she attends school four afternoons each week and works at the bank on the fifth. She will finish this program in October 2017 and dreams of having her Canadian "family" there to celebrate with her.

In her spare time Yoselin enjoys playing basketball and going to church with her friends.

You can feel her gratitude through her hugs!

Please help us to see Yoselin through the next 18 months of her education so that she can create a productive life for her and her mother.
