I am Richard Hodges and am the newly appointed president of the Big Woods Springs Improvement Association (HOA). Our community had saved for years to rebuild our bridge that links half of our families, many with children and disabled seniors, to the outside world. The local fire department had recently advised us that they would not cross the bridge with their main truck and we were close to having enough money to rebuild what we had been fund raising and saving for going on four years. Suddenly, we found out that our entire account had been embezzled by a member(s) of the former HOA. I was appointed to the position of president and our new board has been background checked and the organization is now bonded. But....we're still practically broke and as luck would have it....recent torrential rains washed out our bridge. We have applied to FEMA for assistance and been denied as our county was not declared a disaster area by our Wood County judge (east Texas). We have a few bids to date but they are starting at $40,000.00. We have approximately $1,500.00 in our account with monthly operating expenses (propane, electricity, trash pick up, liability insurance, and debt left behind that eats up approximately $1,100.00 per month. WE ARE DESPERATE and searching every avenue for relief and safety for our community.
