Opposition to 660 Eglinton Proposal

The Leaside Community, in partnership with the Leaside Property Owners' Association (LPOA), is raising funds to oppose RioCan's proposed development at 660 Eglinton Ave East. Funds raised will be used to hire a City Planner and Lawyer to represent the community's interests at the OMB hearing.
This ruling on this development will be precedent setting for the Leaside community. A high rise development on this site would open the door for overdevelopment throughout our community, especially along the Eglinton corridor.
To summarize, the community feels that the proposal in its current form:
- Is too high. A mid-rise building is appropriate, consistent with the City's Official Plan
- Will only exacerbate existing traffic congestion and further endanger pedestrians
- Is not of appropriate design and massing for the community
- Does not address the strained community resources (e.g. overcrowding at schools)
- Does not provide adequate retail and commercial space
- Does not respect neighbours' access to open space and sunlight through appropriate transitions
- Will destroy the existing ravine and several large trees that contribute to Leaside's character and natural beauty
- Is too close to the existing condo to the north, 1801 Bayview Ave, completely blocking the views of the south-facing residents
In summary, we the community believe that RioCan has put forward a proposal that is not in the best interests of our community in many respects!
Any excess funds will be used to fight further excessive development that is inappropriate for the area.
