Greeting friends and family, I have unfortunate news for you all. Over the last 6 months, our beloved Abigail has had some growing health concerns. Many doctors visits, hosptal stays and blood transfusions later we finally have some answers.
This past Sunday Abigail was admitted once again with a rapidly dropping hemoglobin, a fever, severe pain, and blood in her stool. After a cat scan they started her on IV antibiotics and planned to give blood on the assumption that she had colitis (inflammation/bacteria in the gut). When the wonderful GI Doctor at Capital Health came by to see Abbey late that evening he shared that he was not convinced that she had colitis, and that he would be doing a colonoscopy the next day.
Before She was even awake from anesthesia, the Doctor brought Mom (Kelly) in to tell her what he found.
Abigail has a cancerous mass that is almost completely blocking part of her colon (large intestine) called an adenocarcinoma. There is only a pinpoint sized hole to let stool through, which explains the pain. Because of this, and the severity of her complications (losing blood as quickly as she gets it), she needs surgery urgently. She was transferred Tuesday evening from Capital Health Hopewell to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), where she will have surgery within the next couple of days.
This morning we talked with Dr. Shanmugan who will be doing the surgery. Based on family history, and Abigail's age he believes she has something called Lynch syndrome. She had genetic testing at Capital Health prior to transfer that will give us those results eventually. He explained that he would like to remove Abigail's entire colon based on her extremely high risk of reoccurrence, and she will continue to have high surveillance for the rest of her life. We will know more about the possibility of chemotherapy after the surgery pathology reports come back, but he explained that chemotherapy is often not warranted when the entire colon is removed, and that people with Lynch syndrome don't respond as well to chemotherapy.
I have set up this page in an effort to help ease the financial burden for Abigail and Andy. They will likely incur many medical expenses, along with food, travel and accommodation expenses to be near the hospital. Abigail and Andy are self employed and will likely lose some significant income due to the unknown recovery period.
We ask you all now for your prayers, good vibes and funny jokes. If you are able to give financially, even $7 would cover a sandwhich.
