The friends and family of Lonnie Knight ask you to join us in supporting Lonnie’s fight against esophageal cancer.
You most likely know Lonnie as one of Minnesota’s finest musicians. He is a stellar guitar player, singer and songwriter who has earned several Minnesota Awards for best guitarist. He has produced many CDs and his music has touched hearts around the world.
Lonnie has been a continuously active, generous supporter of others for decades. He has used his considerable music talent (performance and production), his design skills, and his encouraging words to help friends and strangers alike. He is quick to donate his time and talent to benefits and fundraisers, including Guitars for Vets, Camp Gratitude and many others.
Having been blessed over and over by Lonnie’s music, it is now our turn to reach out to Lonnie.
In March, 2016, Lonnie began to experience severe symptoms of what he and his doctor thought was a bad case of acid reflux for which medication was prescribed. When difficulty eating and swallowing worsened and Lonnie began to lose considerable weight, a series of tests (CT scans, stress tests, endoscopy, etc.) were performed.
On April 1, 2016, Lonnie was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer that has spread to his liver. The cancer Lonnie has is supposedly incurable. The doctors say that surgery is not an option, the best they can do is possibly hold the tumors at bay, giving him a few more years. Those are the medical facts. But as Lonnie has said, “Patti and I are aiming higher.” While embarking on a chemotherapy regimen through the Fairview/University of Minnesota Cancer Center, they are also implementing alternative treatments which have demonstrated effectiveness in controlling the symptoms of cancer, lessening side effects of chemotherapy and attacking cancer cells.
Lonnie is already close to $40,000 in debt due to cancer, with more medications and tests yet to come. He has minimal medical insurance, which pays only a small percentage of his costs. Many of the costs in his fight against cancer and managing its symptoms are not covered. His medical debt continues to mount.
Lonnie and Patti are incredibly grateful for the support they have received from family and friends. This GoFundMe site has been created in response to people asking what they can do to help. As Lonnie writes:
Our goals are simple… to find a way out of the financial black hole, and to fight this cancer with every means at our disposal. I am still able to play gigs — it wears me out, but the emotional strength I gain from this is more than worth the exhaustion. If it weren’t for the music, Patti and you folks, I know I would not be able to handle any of this.
