Hello my name is Melissa and as some of you may know my sister Clarissa was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) 4 years ago. The drug that is available to her is not working very well, and fewer than half of patients survived more than 5 years after diagnosis.
The doctors recommended for her to have the transplant. 'Allogeneic stem cell transplant is the only known cure for CML. In an allogeneic transplant, the stem cells come from a donor, and to lower the chance of complications, the donor needs to “match” the patient in terms of tissue type. Usually a brother or sister is a good match but my mom and I resulted to be only be a 25% match. After months of waiting they finally found a match for her. Before a stem cell transplant, high doses of chemotherapy are given to kill the leukemia cells. This treatment kills the leukemia cells, but also damages the normal bone marrow cells. Then after these treatments, the patient receives a transplant of blood-forming stem cells to restore the bone marrow.'
My family and I received the news that she has to do bone marrow transplant sooner than we expected. These passed months she has been in and out of doctors appointments and missing days from work in preparation for the transplant. With your help we can raise money for her medical and household expenses while she is out from work and on long term disabilty which will be about a year depending on her recovery.
My sister is loving and caring mother of a 10 year old boy who wishes his mother to get well soon. She will be in the hospital for about 3 months and because he is under age he won't be able to visit her. She has always been there for me and I want to be there for her in anyway I can.
