RYKERS STORY: please SHARE
It was a normal monday where i woke up my older 2 kids got them ready for school, took them to the school bus and went home to get rykers breakfast ready wake him up get him dressed let him eat and then start our day. We ended up doing laundry at a laundry mat because our dryer broke and we had 6 loads to do so we hung out and played together..then i watched him as he was running and playing and laughing....jumping. We finished and went home. We walked together (ryker and i) to get him and his brother and sister a slurpee to 7-11 at about 7pm. He was jumping over and balancing on the train tracks and racing me up the steep stairs like he always did with his sweet giggle. When we got back home i gave ryker my phone to watch netflix and i left him with his dad while i went grocery shopping. I came back around 8:30pm, ryker was on my bed still playing with my phone and he started whinning when I took my phone to check if anyone called and he got louder yelling "no one called you"!!! i gave him the phone back thinking he must be tired. I walked into my bathroom in my room (he was on my bed) when his cries got louder and he threw my phone and slid himself off my bed. He started saying "owie" and crying with real tears now. I was asking him what hurt? But He wouldnt tell me, so i kept looking all over his body..but nothing looked weird or abnormal? I thought maybe he was tired so i picked him up and held him.. He calmed down a little so i started making him a bath.. He got in it and started screaming..when i got him out he was limping.. I asked if his leg hurt and he said yes..i Got him dressed and decided to take him in at 8:45 pm now knowing somethings wrong.ryker screamed the whole way there holding his feet knees and thighs.. We get to st vincents around 9:15pm where he had now fallen asleep so they did an xray and told me he was normal. I had a bad stomach flu the saturday before this and i thought maybe his tummy hurt and he was becoming weak and irritable? They sent us home. When we got there Ryker started screaming and I called the doctor at the ER and ask them to relook at the X-ray.. they told me to come back for an ultrasound but I went to dornbechers hospital instead. when we got there they checked his tummy, but since he was sleeping and didn't react to his stomach hurting.. they discharged him. as soon as we got to the car I was backing up ready to leave when Ryker threw up everywhere so I pulled over got him out of the car and I tried to stand him up, but he collapsed.. I pulled him up again and told him to help me stand him up and he told me" I can't get up" - I tickled his feet and he didn't respond so I ran him into the hospital yelling at them that he couldn't feel his legs. They finally admitted him around1:30am and scheduled him for an MRI hours later. After the MRI they told me Ryker has transverse myelitis. Transverse myelitis is a neurological disorder caused by inflammation across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. The term myelitis refers to inflammation of the spinal cord; transverse simply describes the position of the inflammation, that is, across the width of the spinal cord. Attacks of inflammation can damage or destroy myelin, the fatty insulating substance that covers nerve cell fibers. This damage causes nervous system scars that interrupt communications between the nerves in the spinal cord and the rest of the body.anyone at any time can get this. Only 1400 people a year get this. PLEASE help me spread transverse myelitis awareness.rite now our goal is to get ryker to chicago for intense physical therapy, a custom wheelchair so he can get himself around in, and a service dog for many reasons. Im still trying to find a dr to consult with the TM expert in dallas and i will never stop until ive exhausted every option for rykers full recovery!!
