Killian has a right upper arm fracture, several broken ribs a fracture at the base of his skull where the brain stem connects to the spinal cord. He has a spleenic fracture that is no longer bleeding. He bruised both lungs but is holding his own
Killian has been sent to Saint Luke's as they have a better pediatric wing then Saint Als does
Here is her update
Update: Brandy is pretty broken left knee was tore off and sewed back on. Left ankle is pinned with a cage around it. Right leg femur set concerned about right knee and concerned about lower right. Left arm is not set yet. On blood thinners for injury to artery on neck Killian is doing good and we were told if they can keep him calm he won't need a halo just a brace
Brandy also got her brace off and they need to get the swelling down in her arm before they can operate on it. Killian is doing good and is just ready for the Drs to fix him so he can sit up and have lemonade
Brandy is doing good they elevated her left arm changed the brace on Her right leg and have changed the dressing on her left leg the rn here today is not nice
she has two surgeries tomorrow one on her arm and one on her right leg
Neurosurgeon is pushing for just trying the collars. They have a couple of different ones and for now they will switch them out every 24 hours to change the pressure points. They work by a committee here and are waiting for the other surgeons to weigh in. By not fusing the spine they are working outside the box so to speak. Anything you read will say to fuse. But his neurosurgeon has been 3 for 3 in just wearing the collar. They retain full range of motion and better quality of life. He got to sit up for little bit this afternoon and that took it out of him this evening if everything is still going good he can finally have his lemonade
Killian got to pull the NG tube out his nose!
I want to thank you all for prayers and thoughts!!! We have been in contact with their guardian Angel Leah Kaupanger-Woodward who was first on scene with her husband and held Killian's cspine the entire time!! She is the reason Killian is doing soo amazing!!!
So we are hoping to raise funds to help with the medical expenses that are coming and to help with all the recovery that will be needed. We appreciate all the thoughts prayers and anything that can be donated to help while these two are recovering.
Leah is his guardian angel. I am so thankful Killian and his mother are going to be ok. As a side note I think it's horrible that people are leaving comments that her child should have been in a different car seat. Unless you know this family personally you do not even know what car seat he was in. It just said booster type seat. They make booster seats with high backs that have full restraints in them. It does not always go by age it goes by height and weight. He looks like a good size 4 year old. Also Do not cast stones upon this mother without first looking in the mirror and know you are not perfect. please just send this family encouragement and prayers and be thankful they are alive.
Omg. I was a passenger in a car accident in December of 2014. I was internally decapitated. Ruptured spleen and broken ribs. We have the same exact injuries. I proved all my doctors wrong. Did not require surgery. I cried reading the experience article about Killian. I am so incredibly glad that he is doing so much better. I would love to keep in touch. I have been unable to find anyone who has survived these injuries. Your son is amazing
Dawn, that's correct. Besides which, the team of neurosurgeons who have seen their fare share of brain trauma noted that a 5 point harness seat would have held his body tightly against the back seat allowing for ONLY his head and limbs to move forward. They believe this would have killed him for sure. Because his body was able to have SOME forward movement, his neck/head did not take the full force of impact. It was distributed over more of his body. There are many instances of this very thing happening. I don't advocate one type of seat over another. We are all doing our best as parents. There is someone out there who will always be a better wife, mother, sister, friend. We don't need anyone thinking they know better than others.
I just read this story and am sending lots of prayers your way. My son and hubby were in a car accident on March 5, 2016. My son Zach was severely injured as well. He also had an internal decapitation, his C1 and C2 were fractured and had to be fused together (spinal cord was completely preserved). He is being released from the hospital to go home 14 weeks post accident. This past Sunday, he graduated from HS. From one mom to another, don't give up and don't take no for an answer. They said Zach would never be the same again...He proved them wrong. By the power of God and the prayers of all those who have read his story, Zach is doing extremely well. If you didn't know he was in an accident, you would never know the difference. God Bless!
Thank goodness he is going to be okay. Both of you are in my thoughts in this difficult time. As a mother, I can't image what it would be like to see my child in such a state and my heart breaks for you to have gone through that. Car Seats for the Littles is a Facebook page that has helped me understand the importance of car seat safety. This isn't my first time hearing about internal decapitation because there are, unfortunately, other stories out there like yours and they don't all have a happy outcome. Check out the page to learn more about how important it is to have your child in the right seat. I wish you both well!
Somebody has written in the comments that this is a scam.... I am dumbfounded. This 'story' is reported on every major news site around the world. Do you not think this family have suffered enough without cruel comments like that? Anyway, moving on... My sister lost her little boy and he should have been 4 now so this story has hit me hard. Leah, you and your hubby are amazing. Brandy and Killian, I wish you a full recovery as quickly as possible. I will continue to donate little amounts as I can. I am enjoying reading the updates on the little guy so keep them coming xxx
